Question on Australian standards.

On a lot of welding forums and videos, I see that 7018s are pretty much the go to rods for structural welds (with the exception of 6010s for pipe root passes). But today my TAFE teacher told me that 7018s are no longer used in Australia and that pretty much all structural welds with stick are done w...

Re: belt guard

Psshh... As long as it gets the job done, who cares? And it ain't like welders or boilermakers need to know how to use that incredibly user unfriendly program...

Re: Would like to see root pass with stick

5P rods? Hmmm... I better have a talk with my teacher again. Yeah, I don't have a camera so I am unable to upload pictures. I'll "master" open root stick eventually...

Re: Would like to see root pass with stick

Well, the reason why he may have never heard of them is because he was boilermaker/welder at workshops. He never worked in shipyards, plants, etc. He seems competent enough to teach this general fabrication course and he has over 20 years of experience. But yeah, it does kind of worry me that he's n...

Would like to see root pass with stick

I am still having trouble with the root pass with the 6013 and would like to see how it is done. The gap we're using in class is 1mm and don't ask why we're using 6013s instead of 6010s. I asked my teacher why we aren't using 6010s and he said he's never heard of them... Anyways, I would really like...

Re: Whip and pause with 6013s?

Damn... where were you working making 93K in 7 months welding plates? Are you in the United States or Canada?

Re: Whip and pause with 6013s?

Interesting... Are they a lot cheaper or something? Also, what kind of "bad habits" are you talking about?

Re: Whip and pause with 6013s?

All right, thanks. You haven't used one in 25 years? Are 6013s ever used outside of the classroom?

Whip and pause with 6013s?

In my welding class, we're doing a 1g plate with a 45 degree bevel and about a 1 mm gap just as an exercise. I'm having some trouble with getting the first pass done right and was wondering if I should just string it or do that whip and pause motion. Any advice? Also, am I to really dig into that ga...
