Re: Spray tranfer on a transformer machine
There is no way to tell how many volts it's putting out! It only has current switches on the front panel and a separate wire feeder unit. No digital meters on my welder :P . If it's necessary to know the voltage, maybe I could measure it on a separate device between + and -? That way I could learn h...

Spray tranfer on a transformer machine
I have an old ESAB LAG315 MIG/MAG welder from the 80's. I was wondering if it is possible to use spray transfer on it. I'm using 1,0mm wire (~0,04") and argon with 18% co2. What kind of setting should I use? Also I've been wondering about the relationship between voltage and current. Why do som...

Re: Spray-arc
I'm interested in trying out spray transfer migging. I have an older 315amp Esab MIG/MAG and using 100% CO2 atm. I guess the way to start is to up the current, lower the wire feed and try to keep a tight arc to up the voltage? Will I have any luck with 100% CO2? I also have 100% argon for my tig? I ...

Re: Tips for thick aluminium?
I got it done! Helium was after all way too expensive so I just gave it a good pre-heat. Here's a video on it if you are interested!

Re: Tips for thick aluminium?
Yeah 8-) . Even portable it's not very light because there is a 600kg lathe headstock on the trailer! This is my pump: http://www.ekwb.com/shop/pumps-and-accessories/pumps/ek-dcp-4-0-12v-dc-pump.html The inlet hose inside diameter as I recall is 8mm (or 6). Should I need a bigger hose? The flow real...

Re: Tips for thick aluminium?
I remembered wrong! My torch is actaully a 20-style. I guess a 20 is actually smaller than 17? Whatsoever it still gets too hot. Thanks for the info on the inlet hose, I will let the original in it's place but I'll look for a stronger pump.. Today I'm going to preheat it to 270F/120C and see if that...

Re: Tips for thick aluminium?
Thanks for your replies!! I have water cooler (aluminium water tank 20-liter), I think my pump is adequate but the inlet water line seems very small (2-3mm inside). I should try changing that to a bigger one. I doubt algae is an issue yet since the cooler/torch are only about 2 months old. I wonder ...

Tips for thick aluminium?
I've got to weld a 10mm thick flange to a BMW gearbox. This is the heaviest welding job I've ever attempted. I'm hoping to get some tips on how to approach this job! I've got a 250amp welder and a 17-style water-cooled torch from River-Weld. My setup looks like this: http://s24.postimg.org/kedu13eb5...

Re: Shop-River torches
This is the setup I ended up using for the cooling: http://imgur.com/KqEc71J,6bsIFEE,IGr1YSD,kLMYgba,ucbcY2n#0 I had a small 12v submerged water pump on a bucket of distilled water, so no tap water used. Maybe not the most compact cooling system but it did the job perfectly! I did maybe 3 hours of n...

Re: Shop-River torches
So when talking practically, it leaks the electricity to the water? Does it ruin the hoses or affect the welding procedure? Is this only on AC?

Re: Shop-River torches
Looks like the first job I'll be doing with the new WC-torch is aluminium and it's going to have to be done using tap water as coolant.. Should I rather use the air-cooled torch? Someone mentioned it's not a good idea to use tap water when welding on AC. This is because my cooler still isn't finishe...

Re: Introducing Filler Rod On Aluminum GTAW???
You are probably moving the rod towards the puddle so slow, that the heat melts is before it reaches the puddle. You may also be holding the rod too close while waiting for the metal to puddle. That's what happened to me when I was welding alu the first time. When the rod balls up, cut the balled en...

Re: Shop-River torches
I ordered the 20-style water cooled torch with some gas lens parts and electrodes. I've also built a 10-liter aluminum water tank for the cooler. I still need a pump. How much flow from the pump I'd want?. Do I need an external radiator? Is it good enough if I just weld some fins on the tank and may...

Re: Shop-River torches
Thanks for the reply!
Is there is big difference in heating between the big and small torches? I would be AC welding at about 150amps max.

I'm looking for a water-cooled torch for my TIG-welder. This: http://www.ebay.com/itm/200Amp-WP-20F-25-Flexible-TIG-welding-torch-water-cooled-7-6-Meters-/110743686150?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19c8d68c06 looks like a pretty good deal. I'm wondering how a WC-torch body can be flexible? Do t...

Re: Foot pedal wirings
Thanks for your reply! I was thinking that the resistance would resist the voltage going back to the welder to adjust the current up. So it actaully works the other way? I guess I'll try adding a simple resistor in series with the pot and just and see what it does.

Re: Foot pedal wirings
I'll have to get back to this again.. Turns out 100 amps is not enough for my needs. I'm thinking the resistance of the pedal is too high for my welder? So I need to lower the resistance by soldering an extra resistor parallel to either (or both?) of the pots, or changing the whole pots to ones with...

Re: Foot pedal wirings
Working now! I just tried different wirings and I finally got it. I can open the connector again and check which way do the wires go if anyone is interested. But there is still a problem.. With the pedal pot set at max, it only gives around 100amps. I'm thinking the resistances of the pots may not b...
