Re: Lathes and Mills
I did turn the bearing ends on an axle with a set of train wheels on it. :D . I was working at a jobber shop and did lots of different work on that lathe. I had to remove a flange that was seized on an electric motor shaft when I made those large cuts. It was a 10" output shaft on the electric ...

small shop vac makes light work of chips on the lathe, mill, bandsaw, etc, easy cleanup. i have a small Sears 2 1/2 gal vac you can hold in your hand for quick tool cleanups LOL, I was just thinking of the chips I have made at work. :? 1.750" off the diameter at a feed rate of 0.028 per revolut...

Re: 1/16" rods vertical up.
A 20 amp outlet is not an option for me on the trail. I am trying to run 1/16" rod so that I can do temporary fixes on the trail to get back to the highway. 5/64" rods worked fine too, but the inverter in the vehicle may not keep up. Please don't take offense to this question. If you can w...

Re: 1/16" rods vertical up.
I tried larger rods today with no luck. The small welder pops a 15 amp breaker when welding with the 3/32" rods. What I did learn is that supporting the 1/16" rod helps drastically. Pushing the rod into the V with force prevents the slag inclusions. This will do fine for me. I let a outlet...

Re: 1/16" rods vertical up.
I'll try some 3/32 7018 today and senjoy how it does. I think it will be too much for the little welder. I have looked at the alternator welder, but I won't give up my air conditioning to put in a welder. LOL.

1/16" rods vertical up.
I will start with some back ground info. I take my vehicle off road. Sometimes things break and welding would be a great option. A small welder that can be run off an inverter is my plan. I picked up this welder. http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj269/05blaz/20140525_193728_zpsrzdnum7q.jpg http://...

Re: What I welded today....
Thank you! I have noticed a difference with the little welder plugged into a 20amp vs a 15amp plug. Also, the shiney steel is way better than mill scale when you are pushing the welders limits. Like I say, I have maybe 10lbs of Mig wire under my belt now. The welds look better now than they did a we...

This piece of metal has seen 20 years of abuse. http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj269/05blaz/IMG-20140512-01003_zps2ac17f85.jpg Mig was the choice because we had a 20 amp 120 plug, and I didn't want to chip the flux between passes. The wear is uneven so some half passes and some full passes with ...

Re: Help With Some SS Buildup On A Thin Wall Part
Just buy a new chunk of SS and have the machinist make a new part from scratch.
If I were quoting that job I would give the machinist 8 hours to make it from scratch.
I have built up lots of parts with weld, some times it was the wrong choice.
Good luck.

Re: Precision Measurement Tools and Marking Out
I have been a machinist for 16 years now. I will give you a couple of answers. Digital callipers are not as accurate as a micrometer. With a Micrometer I can measure to an accuracy of + or - 0.0001" (0.0025mm). This may seem too much but as you start dealing with bearing fits you will require t...

Re: repair a shaft
Build up and re machine is fairly common. I do not like the center punch trick. If you have a knurling tool it will do a far better job because more metal is displaced and the bearing will have more points of contact. Weld and re machine is the best option if it is a mild steel shaft. http://i274.ph...

Looks good. Just a heads up, our welder manual at work specifically said not to tin (solder) the wires. Check your manual to be sure you are safe.

@ noddybrian I have met lots of people with lots of skills. The comment was meant to be funny because not everyone has a lathe in their shop, and we all do what we can with the tools at our disposal. No disrespect is ever built in to my comments. Safety concerns will be stern though. ;) @ Ironchef I...

Re: Best way to rebore sprocket
Easier to bore and bush (says the machinist with access to a lathe). Not all sprockets have hardened teeth but you can soften the ones that are hard by over heating them. If you throw up some pictures we may be able to help more.

Body work is generally done with a bunch of tacks spread out over a long period of time. Weld beads will distort sheet metal. 24 ga seems a little thin to me, I usually over size stuff though.
