Re: Some welding career advice needed
I wouldn't give up six figures to start a welding career @ 47. Remember that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. I bet there are plenty of welders that would love to be in IT. Sit at a desk, go home clean at the end of the day. etc. I would say if you want to change, pick up ...

blaz, What's that the motor mount for? I don't recognize it. My gut reaction is, you're missing a heat-shield. Either the original, or one wasn't built for an aftermarket exhaust or turbo application. Steve S The motor mount is for my 2005 blazer. It has a 4.3 liter V6. From what I have read it is ...

So, my motor mount looked like this. I replaced it and it did the same in less than a month. http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj269/05blaz/IMG-20120806-00302.jpg I started to make a new design today. This one was a FAIL! I couldn't bolt it in. http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj269/05blaz/IMG-20...

Blaz. Why "Put a small tack on the end of the shaft before you start and make sure you can file it before you make the whole shaft glass hard."? Tanks. Alexa If the motor shaft is made of high carbon steel (unusual), the small tack will be hard. If the small tack is hard the whole shaft w...

Re: SETTINGS FOR THIN SHEET METAL
16 gauge is about .060" thick. General rule for steel is 1 amp per .001" of thickness. 60 amps is a good starting point. If it is stainless less may keep it from distorting and also keep the weld a nice rainbow colour instead of grey. 1/16" filler works well. 1/16" or 3/32" ...

Seal sleeves sure are fantastic. Shaft build ups are a pain, but since I'm the one that has to machine it I have leaned many tricks. THE SHAFT IS GOING TO BEND! DON'T FILL IN THE KEYWAY! you should have been a dentist looking in the mirror all day. ;) Here was my day yesterday. Remove motor and gearbox, remove shaft, weld shaft to build up and rough machine the shaft. The 2 centers that bolt to my 1/4" table are fantastic! Should have made them sooner! :D http://i274.photobucke...

Had some time and help this week end. Started and finished the cart for the welder. It is 55" to the top of the welder. I made it this high so I can feed the leads out the window of my garage and weld bigger things that don't fit inside. It is always more work than you think, but I am happy wit...

I bought a little transformer TIG today. :D http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj269/05blaz/IMG-20130522-00501_zpsf5ad48a1.jpg Just a quick weld with rusty steel to make sure it worked. I just ordered my Lincoln Square Wave 175 today and need to make a welding bench. I figured this clamp would make life much easier. I have been watching for a year and no used TIG machines come up for sale in my area. I decided on a transformer machine because I know how simple and reliable th...

I like it Steve. Great solution rather than feeding like crazy. :D . Are you using a water cooled torch? I was welding an aluminium pulley @ work the other day and was running similar amperages and boy did the torch get warm. This is the pulley. (aprox. 6" diameter) You can see the section that...

Everlast and thermal arc have crossed my mind a few times. I have had good luck with Lincoln and Miller thus far. Time to just pull the trigger.
I like the gear box braces! Looks like a lot of work.

Re: extreme frustration
L per Sec to CFM conversion is just over 2, so you are right on there. I would try a little more flow. What are you using to cut / clean the ALUM? I have had issues with my lathe coolant causing problems if I don't wash the part after. Do you have access to another Gas cylinder?

Thanks for the comment Steve. Like everyone, I am still learning. Every little bit of info goes in the memory bank. I won't mark it hot on the welding bench. If it leaves the welding area, it gets marked HOT! It only takes a second. :D I enjoy TIG welding, so it is time to get one for home. I have a...

Had to make a new mount for this motor. New location means lots of mods. Machined the flange mount plate and slotted the angle iron in order to tension the chain. http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj269/05blaz/IMG-20130501-00485_zps359afc6f.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj269/05blaz/IMG-20...

Re: Introducing Filler Rod On Aluminum GTAW???
Torch angle also has a lot to do with it. If you feed the rod from the front and the torch angle is close to 45 degrees your heat is out front. Check you torch angle.
Also, what filler size and what amperage?

It looks as though you have the polarity reversed. I see no note of whether you are running electrode neg or electrode pos.

Shaft build up because the bearing diameter was 0.002" undersize. Being in maintenance it seems as though I never seem to do "typical" welds. I have improved drastically after watching Jody's vids.
