Tighten the gap.1/8 is on the big side for a 1/8 rod.it will help a little to focus your arc too,as will holding a tighter arc

Re: Wrist roll technique
I also weld pipe by day.some jobs you get by with being close.most of the work i do,close isnt close enough. if youre welding a spool thats tacked in position you can worry a little less about distortion,as the structure holds itself holds some strength.if you are welding 2 flanges to a short pup th...

Re: BCP 100 alberta pressure test
Im surprised to see weaving specified Anyway,i cant say turn up your heat as i dont know what rods and amps your running. 5g i would say hot pass always 3/32 and around 90 to 95 amps for me.if things are turning out too convex,it is usually a sign of too much heat.i weave an extra half rod diameter ...

Re: 2" sch 160 6G test with 6010 open root issues
Do you think if I slow down my progression on my root that it will push more of a root inside or the keyhole will close up? Getting more buildup inside the pipe is a balance of travel speed and pushing in.but travelling slower will build the root up on the outside more,if you dont push the rod tip ...

Re: How hard is it to teach yourself open root welding?
Learning open root 6010 is far from 'easy' It takes time, substantial effort and dedication, and just a little guidance. the guidance can be provided by people on this forum if you dont have a dedicated instructor.its not ideal but doable. eventually things fall into place and it becomes second nature...

Re: Newbee...7018 arc going out
You are pushing the machine beyond its limit.
its 25% @ 175a max.when you combine arc force and hot start you are running a lot more heat than the presetting you select.
turn it down, and turn the arc force down low or close to zero.you do not want it high running 7018

Read in a few forums that it ran 6010 well
i found the opposite.you cannot whip most 6010 with it.you can whip a 6011

"At the equivalent amps for that diameter..."
I think he means normal operating amps for each electrode size.so yes,a bigger rod running at its optimum setting will penetrate more than a smaller rod

Re: Overhead 6010 root buildup
Unless the gap is a tad big,i normally dont whip at 6 o clock or overhead.just push push push the rod up.then push some more.
if youre struggling still, get a partner,or pardner,to hood up and check the buildup as you weld.

Re: 6010 vs 6011
Ocv has very little to lighting up a 6010 the 'working voltage' of the machine, along with the falling characteristic of its output is what it relies on. working voltage is the actual voltage across the arc when welding.6010 rods need a higher value to operate.ocv on the other hand is only present ti...

Re: What is this "dig" you speak of?
I strongly agree; other problems like undercut, overlap, slag inclusions, incomplete fusion, and lack of fusion have a higher probability of occurrence using a whip and pause manipulation with a low hydrogen rod.[/quote] What you listed are possible problems encountered with every type of rod,but d...

Re: What is this "dig" you speak of?
when learning to weld 7018 1/8" do not exceed 110 amps DCEP do not whip and pause. Huh? Why not? in addition to slag inclusions the whip and pause motion can allow for serious undercut, especially if welding in a groove. That isnt the problem with 7018.it is not whipped as it will lose gas shi...

Re: 6g stick welding help
Run 6011 the same way jodie runs 6010 in his vids.
6013 needs a lot of drag angle on top and bottom of the pipe,or it gets slaggy.coming up the sides, are less susceptible to it.
you can run 6013 a few different ways.weave, pause, weave etc or wash the pool side to side with no pausing at the sides
