How do get shielding? Do you use a carburizing flame?

Re: Aluminum welding in 1932
It must be gas. According to the Lincoln "Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding" neither MIg or Tig had been invented at that time. I wonder how they managed to do it?

Aluminum welding in 1932
1932 gas tank.jpg This is a picture of a gas tank for a 1932 OMC 4hp outboard motor. I read that Tig type process's were just being discoverd in the early 30's and that Heliarc was not invented until the early 40's. Does anyone know what kind of welding would have been used for this. The tank is al...

Re: Tig torch parts
The LWS's in my area (Toronto) leave a lot to be desired. They stock very little and can "order it in". I have been ordering from places like Arc-Zone. Even with the exchange rate and shipping it costs less than local and gets here faster.

Tig torch parts
I want to buy some nozzles for my torch. All the suppliers I know of only sell in multiples of ten. Does anyone know of a supplier that will sell smaller quantities?
Thanks, Peter.
Thanks, Peter.

Mig and Aluminum
I know you can weld Aluminum with Mig from seeing videos. I have been looking at machines and even the Miller and Lincoln high end machines are only DC. How do they do Aluminum without the cleaning action of AC?
Thanks, Peter.
Thanks, Peter.

Re: Adding a "Contractor" / Switch to Scratch Start Tig Mach
All switches and contacts have a current and voltage rating. The voltage rating has to do with how far apart things are spaced in the switch or contact, when in the open position. High voltage will arc across openings. Switches with a higher voltage rating have greater spacing between parts. If you ...

Re: Power factor correction...?
Power factor is caused by inductive loads in AC circuits. Motors, transformers and older lighting ballasts are inductors. If you look at the nameplate of an electric motor you will see that the output power (the rating of the motor in H.P.) is less than what you get if you multiply the voltage by th...

Re: Colour of bronze rod
Finally got it sorted out. In case anyone is interested the silicon-bronze was a perfect match for the more reddish bronze part and an aluminum-bronze was more yellow and less red and a very good match for the other part. So for the rods I bought, silicon-bronze was more red and aluminum-bronze was ...

Colour of bronze rod
I have two 1912 Evinrude gearcases to weld. They are both bronze but of different alloys. One is more reddish and the other more yellow. I have a silicon bronze tig rod which is a perfect match for the reddish piece. I have seen an aluminum bronze rod listed on some suppliers sites. Does anyone know...

Re: Reduction in flow for gas lense
Otto. Thanks for attempting to answer my question. I think you misunderstood what I was asking. If one is welding at 15CFH given all conditions, what is the % reduction in gas flow if switching to a gas lense under the exact same conditions?

Reduction in flow for gas lense
Just picked up some gas lenses and am wondering how much of a reduction in flow I should try. Right now I'm welding some aluminum at 15CFH. Is there a standard % of reduction?
Thanks, Peter.
Thanks, Peter.

Re: Noob question
Thanks for the input. I did clean the mill scale off but forgot to wipe with acetone. I think it was the Miller site that recomended 10CFH at that level of current. I checked out several welding sites and gas flow recomendations all vary greatly. I will up it and also check the torch angle. I did ch...

Noob question
Just started running my first beads this week. This is one of the better looking ones. I keep getting these holes in the bead. Not sure if it's too much or too little gas. Settings are 70 amps DC, 10 CFH of argon, 1/16 tungsten and 3/32 filler rod, steel is .125". Also the beads all have a dull...
