Re: My homemade exhaust fan

It is very well done. You might think about using car door edge protector on the sharp edges. It cuts to length and just snaps on. Or poly-flow plastic tubing, slit it to slip over the edge. It is really tough (handles 5000 psi) and will give a nice round edge. Just a thought.

Re: Completely over-engineered welding cart.

All you need is a hoist to handle the gas bottles and a motor to push that big thing around... Other than that, it is really well built, the design is good and it will be something you can pass down to your grand children. I like it very much.

It appears that I misunderstood the cable sizes. I have learned something new.

Re: Wire for the ground.

The cable you need depends on the distance you plan to span to your welding projects. You would need larger cables at 100 ft, than you need for only 25'. I would recommend that you visit your local welding supply (LWS) and discuss it with them. They can point you to the correct cable and supply it. ...

Re: Which flap discs?

I was lucky enough to pickup 25 3M 60 grit flap disks for $50 some time ago on Ebay. They are some of the best I have used. They just seem to keep going. I have used the Walthers and they are great, but very expensive. I really like their cup brushes, like their flap disks they are renewable ( have ...

Three friends and I started with a Fisher Harris anvil from around 1870. It had quite a few issues with cracks, so we had to grind out all of those. The more we chased th...

Welding NI99 rod with Thermal Arc Fabricator 181i

Has anyone welded cast iron with NI-99 / NI-55 rods using a Thermal Arc Fabricator 181i? If so, what kind of experience did you have? Any suggestions on running these rods with this machine? Several of us are restoring a cast iron anvil from the 1870's and we may have to weld using this machine. The...

Re: What the hell were you thinking?

If you happen to have 300 hours of spare time, 7,000 American nickels and the desire to make 35,000 welds, then you can make a nickel couch. This is what you call "Art Nuvo". I think it is quite good. There is an artist in Spain welding thousands of nuts (as in bolts) and selling it for m...

Re: What am I not understanding (flux core)

It may very well be polarity. All of the flux core I have used (up to .035) is DCEN or DC Electrode Negative. I am not familiar with your machine, but it may also be that you have the voltage up way high, and the wire speed too slow. If your setting are close to correct, the arc will sound like the ...

Re: New Here-What MIG machines are you guys running?

I am also new here. I have a Clarke 190en that I use for fluxcore (it can do gas) and a Thermal Arc Fabricator 181i (mig/stick/tig) inverter machine. I have just had it for a couple of weeks and haven't yet worked in stick or tig with it. I really like the consistent arc and the quality drive.

Re: Mig Tank

If you are having really poor welds with FC, make sure your polarity is correct. It should most likely be DCEN, DC Electrode Negative. Solid wire / gas is normally DCEP. If you are not sure, check with the manufacturer. The wrong polarity with FC will produce welds like you described or as Jody says...

Re: Clarke Welder question

I bought a Clarke 190EN about a year ago for $300 new, before I found out they had gone bankrupt. I have taught myself to weld fluxcore with it. It is a good welder but the drive and gun are a little cheap. You can find consumables for it, but things like guns are harder to locate. I decided that if...
