Still at it
Been a few years since I have been on this forum. It's just me here at the shop now. I do all the fitting and welding for a production shop now. I'll be 62 soon. I just don't want to work, while youngsters cling to their phones and live their day in the crapper so I sent them on their way. They'll n...

Re: Foot pedals and micro switches
If you want a momentary switch that will last a long time, even with continuous, manual pulse welding, this one is hard to beat and it fits nice and flat to the torch. I've been using this same style switch for 17 years and the one I currently have is probably about 7 years, used every day hard. htt...

I clean out those cracks with an 1/8" drill bit and pin tack it. https://scontent.ftpa1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/11705236_10205718788023078_5409197544022663005_n.jpg?oh=95bcd58eb8548db0aa003f9cc5e5427e&oe=57F74EE5 Works well enough. https://scontent.ftpa1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/11063801_1...

Re: Argon prices
$38 for 250 from Praxair. They charge the same for 3 sticks of tungsten as what Airgas charges for two. Also, their other consumables are notably cheaper as well. My employer bought 4 owner bottles but they only come in 250, which is a pita with the amount of welding we do. Airgas was having difficu...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Haven't been doing too much boat stuff in the last few months. Not for the lack of it, we've just been on a lengthy and involved, production project. Instead of using a separate, left and right pattern or superimposing one over the other, which I have to draw full size each time, I just draw one and...

Re: Measuring Arc On Time
My machine at home has 100% duty cycle to the end of the dial and the fan is always on. On the other hand, machines with less, when using them full on, the torch's power cable will give out before the machine does, water cooled or not. We run our machines full on, every day. I have been abusing the ...

Re: A weird little thing
My son has been working with me for over a year now and he could not believe the fashion in which this all took place. He has turned out to be a darned good aluminum weldor in his own right in such a short time with what I consider to be 'intense' training. At any rate, I have his attention. I don't...

And here's how I made the knob. Don't laugh. It works! I welded this little bit first. https://scontent.ftpa1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/12321575_10207091941631060_2816558993880184260_n.jpg?oh=0ecd487720fcad2be8597196f69136b7&oe=5781C76B And then capped that with an aluminum cookie. :...

Re: A weird little thing
Here's where people start to question my sanity but, at least they leave me alone. :D Here's what the joint looks like completed. I didn't want it to leave bolt imprints all down the pipe over time so I made a little brake for the bolt to push against the pipe. Basically it's just a section of the p...

A weird little thing
Been awhile for me here and there has been days in the last 6-7 months where I am actually tired of welding and weekends aren't long enough in that regard. In other words, when I have been getting home, I really haven't felt like talking about, or looking at any more welding. Anyway, here is a stran...

Re: When Do You Guys Change Your Bottle
I'll run it until the CFH starts to drop and then adjust the flow back up one more time until it drops again. If you think there is moisture in your cylinders, complain about it until they either give you a free fill or take extra care with your particular order. We had a gas salesman promise us the...

Re: F-450 Broken Transmission Housing.
Any high torque applications, I'll weld the cracks, grind them flush other than leaving the zipper bead on the inside provided there is clearance, and then fit and weld plates on the exterior, such as in between those fins. Adding extra fins made of plate works as well in some situations also. Eithe...

Re: Bump Welding Uses
Installed TamJeff style pendant switch about 8 months ago Bump welding works,No dragging a pedal Seems 250 syncrowave with continuous HF likes it better than the inverter. But the method works,(both AC/DC) thanks for tip It's a sort of renegade approach but, at least one can make saleable, sound we...

Your tips have been missed. Doing more with less is an encouragement to me. Like the ingenuity that helps my learning curve. Welcome back. We've been buried at work for the last 6-7 months. I hate to say it but, I have actually been welded out by the time I get home. We get by with a band saw, mitr...

Re: Bump Welding Uses
Here's two that my son did. He's been welding for a little over a year. I just picked this frame at random. He consistently gets welds like this and is already fast at it. He'll go full forward travel down the straight away from the crotch of this joint, and bump the cup on the weld around that tigh...

Re: Bump Welding Uses
So help me out, I've never heard of bump welding. It seems to me that you're powering on just long enough to tie in at the bottom of the joint. If you stayed on too long the puddle would want to run up the side walls and break the top edge. No, I leave it on and fill it from the bottom up. I just s...

Re: Bump Welding Uses
Here, bump welding was used to somewhat closely match the production welds on the rest of the tank. By the time it ages a bit, the additions will not be very noticeable, or afterthoughts at least. The rectangle tube under it is just to keep it from cooking my table any worse than it has been already...

Bump Welding Uses
Especially handy when asked to weld joints that are not common that have to look good, or where you only have one chance to get it right with no way to set up practice runs. Also good for matching other weld profiles such as those from automated processes or perhaps, spool gun welds. Another area wh...

Re: bending aluminum for a fuel cell?
I'll remind everyone that TamJeff has extensive experience with aluminum, including difficult alloys and surface treatments. You CAN build a fuel tank like this, but unless you have a bore-scope to examine the inside corners, you should do much practice first on scraps you can examine the back side...

Two are for slosh baffles and two are end caps. I stitch welded flanges onto t...

Don't you guys use AdBlock???? I've been using it for years and haven't seen an ad in years, every once in awhile I'll be on someone else's computer, and they won't have it, and it's horrifying to see how many ads there are on so many sites... I'm amazed not everyone uses AdBlock, it's been around ...
