Re: Stainless Steel SMAW Tips
I do stainless pipe welds all the time and I strike my arc just where I want to start welding, stainless rods work like that, with 7018 I start ahead like you do. I also travel fast at the beginning to get my starts look smooth if you travel same speed at the start as you do on rest of the bead you ...

Ok, then it aint so bad test to take, but still it would be better if you could do some training before the test.
I wish you luck and hope you nail it.

Re: SMAW 4G Plate Test - Stainless Steel (316L-16)
Greetings, My employer dropped a bomb on me today. Next week they are sending me out to take a weld test. SMAW 4G Stainless Steel 316L-16 Unfortunately, the only stainless steel certified welder got fired this morning and now the urgency is on me to get certified. I've never ran a bead nor struck a...

Re: 904L stainless 6g
Thanks for the info. I did that test yesterday, it was not a 6g pipe, it was four pipes in 5g position and one in 2g. It wasn´t much different from normal stainless, only rooting was a little bit harder, but after a couple of practise runs it went in fine. Now they will go through x-ray and bend tes...

904L stainless 6g
Have anyone ever tried this test here? Or even welded it with stick? I have to do it tomorrow so our company can get a wps for it. I have only welded 304 and 316 stainless and I would like to know if it welds similary compared to those materials. I will post later how it went, but If you guys have a...

Svetsare, That is some impressive work there my man! You need to make a few more videos welding your SS pipe SMAW. -Jonathan Thanks :D What would you like to see? Maybe I do some kind of a video if you give me an idea. I have been planning to do a 7018 open root pipe welding video, but havent got t...

But tell me what do you think about the remote, is it any good? and what thickness and material was that pipe on the youtube video?

Re: Stainless welding
Yes it looks and it is kind of different than anything else. Stick welding this thin material in this position does´t look as good as in the rolling table. But its still possible to put an x-ray quality weld in.
Hope you have a chance to try this someday, its a really good equipment, remote I mean.

Re: Plate setup question
Well I like to use 2,5 mm cap and 0 land. If I have a bigger cap it just means little less amperage and more weaving and if it gets huge I change to electrode negative. If cap is to small and I am in a hurry (or to lazy to use grinder) I just put more amperage and burn thru it. But I use 7018 for ro...

Well maybe in vertical up plate, just have to move faster on stainless, but pipe welding technique is much different.
Its hard to explain how it is different.

Re: Stainless welding
I live in Finland, but usually I am working in Sweden in differ, ent locations.
Mostly I weld in factories. In papermills, oil and heat plants. etc..
I do mostly stainless steel pipe welding with stick. But I have certifications for tig also. Both stainless and mild steel.

Re: Stainless welding
Well it is possible to weld this one without a remote, but of course it is a big help, like in any other weld. In 7018 open root pipe it is much more critical to have a remote, yet it is not a must have even on that one. But it makes everything easier-. Especially if you got a bad fit on your weld, ...

Re: Stainless welding
Yes pretty much same as mild steel, maybe a little bit quicker travelspeed. What are you welding? Stainless pipe or plate?
If you do stainless in anything other then flat position I highly recommend to get some kind of a remote.

They can be used on different machines, they just put a piece in your machine that makes it fit to the remote.. I dont know how to say it correctly, I aint a native english speaker youknow. :/ But I have seen these very same remotes on Esab and Fronius machines. They work as well on those ones then ...
