Re: ER70S-2 mild steel TIG welding rod question

I found a couple rolls of copper coated mig wire when cleaning the shop. There's rust on the wire. Is there anything that can be done so it can be used or is it junk now?

Re: hitting a weld

It may have something to do with the work-hardening thing. I know forging steel will harden and strengthen the metal.

Brian,
Thanks for that. I actually know what it's called...just at my age, my memory kinda gets flaky.

Re: Auto Darkening Helments

I've had the HF auto hood for over 5 years. First thing I had to do was make a brim or visor to shade the solar cell when outdoors or it would auto darken from the sun.

Re: Best way to remove paint?

That's the stock set up and has always been a point of water an/or coolant intrusion. Marine gas engines rarely wear out. Water getting in the engine from multiple causes are the usual killers and the exhaust system contributes about half of these.

Everlast 250EX evaluation???

Jody,
I was wondering if you had time to evaluate the Everlast 250EX?

I have been pleasantly surprised with my 225LX I've had for 2 weeks. I haven't been able to practice the past week from all the rain and re-arranging my small shop to fit another TIG/MIG cart.

Re: tig question

I'm curious, I have two chinese made(harbor freight and everlast) and they both came with a separate cable stick wand. Why would you waste the time changing TIG collets or waste the gas?

Re: gas for mig and tig

Hmmm! I have a MIG set up for SS but want to run it from the same bottle as the TIG. Will I have problems with the 100% argon and MIG?

Re: jet john boat

Great!

I made a full water jacketed SS riser/exhaust system. I have aluminum exhaust manifolds I'm going to seal up the water passages. With this new TIG, I think I'll tackle a SS water jacketed exhaust manifold next.

Re: Best way to remove paint?

I have a sand blast cabinet but that's way too dirty. I presume I have to find a clean bead blaster. There's one at the auto shop but that'd be pretty dirty, too.

Re: Dirty Gas Lens

I just tried my first TIGing aluminum for the first time last week so I'm a beginner, too. I noticed that when I touch the tungsten to the work, I get the black soot and have to cut off and re-grind the tungsten and wire brush with a SS brush. I read you can use scotch-brite pads to clean, also. Tha...

Re: homemade gas lens??

Thanks Jody. I just cut out and fit it last night. I wasn't sure if I needed the larger lens style cup or the smaller cup would work.

I'm going to do some practicing as soon as the rain stops.

homemade gas lens??

Just got my first gas lens and it seems basically just a micro mesh screen. I went to the store and found a ladle with a micro mesh SS screen, cut it out and stuck it in a #7 cup(#26 torch). Will it work?

Re: Best way to remove paint?

Sorry. I'm a little slow on computer 'n things. The area of concern is the top section with the exhaust and water passages. The big center hole is the exhaust passage. The smaller rectangular ones surrounding it are the water passages in the water jacket. I made a SS exhaust system that bolts to thi...

Best way to remove paint?

I have some new aluminum marine exhaust manifolds that I am going to weld/seal off the water passages. What would be the best way to remove the factory paint so that it won't interfere with the weld.

OK!
I found the frequency and balance parameters on the Miller link. Takes a while for a noob to navigate.

Still need to find out the 4T/2T switch and what and when to use the pulse settings.

Settings for the Everlast Tig???

Jody, I'm a noob so bare with me. Been reading the Email tips. Trouble is the Everlast TIG settings ain't quite the same as American made and the instruction pamphlet musta been written by a dummy. Can you give me some tips on setting things for aluminum? I have straight Argon with the green tungste...

That's neat! I do some work on I/O's but not jet. I was wondering what power plat you were using. I also don't recognize the exhaust manifold/system. Who's the maker?

Thanks,

Re: DCEN ALUMINUM!!!!!

This is my first post and I was wondering whether to buy a new(cheapie) AC/DC TIG or get a bottle of helium and try it out. I have this little Harbor freight 130 TIG that works well enuff for SS tubing and was wondering if it would work for aluminum with helium.

Whadaya think?
