Re: Gas bottle identification

It looks like your bottle has 'Oxygen' stamped near the top of the cylinder. It could be a bottle for refilling Scuba tanks. http://www.nuvair.com/storage-storagetank.shtml I recently acquired a gas bottle from a friend who got it at an estate sale. He didn't want it but had to take it, and knowing ...

Re: the Stigma of Aluminum Tig

This fellow offers some 'Tips and Tricks' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6emWh53WpZI In relation to stigmas, I want to ask about repairing alum bicycle frames. There seems to be a school of thought that if a Tig welded one cracks, it can be rewelded due to work hardening. Could this be true in all ...

I picked up some 3/4" Spruce plywood for the project. I plan on plunge routing a grid of holes in the table top for clamps.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

You ought to try the metal recycle yards . I get most of my power tools there. Industry 'throws away' a lot of great stuff. I collect only the best 'used' equipment. For the cost of replacing a power cord, bearings, brushes or maybe a switch, I spend a couple of bucks and walk away with $300+ worth ...

Work Table

I have a requirement for a large (4ft X 12ft) work table. It has to be light weight and portable.
No more than 100lbs would be on this table at any given time. I like the following design.
It folds in half when not in use, and the legs fold up inside, for trouble free easy storage.

Thanks for sharing, John. I have a similar project on the go but I might try something different. Last summer, I bought the frame from a retired 40' X 60' fabric covered quonset building. Each of the 13 loops/arches has three parts. (Two long and one short. 2" dia. square tube.) Some of this ma...

$1000 budget... Start by visiting your local welding supplier and see what a bottle of argon will cost you. Then, wander over to the safety equipment isle and see what gloves and a decent welding helmet will cost you. Then, go over and see the cost of Mig wire, welding rods and tungsten. Then, possi...

Re: Rookie looking for help!

When you weld on any heat treated material, use multiple small, hot beads, rather than a large one. The object is to limit the amount of heat you put into the steel as much as possible. Let the first weld get cold enough to touch before you make the second pass, or before you make a pass on the othe...

Re: Airframe Welding

Yes, lower your amps and shorten the arc length. I learned to weld by filling in holes on sheet metal. If you have some scrap tube, try adding weld to the ends. See if you can build up the end of the tube and close it off. If you mess up, just cut the end of the tube off and try again. It's all abou...

I use tooth paste as a polish. and... it smells minty fresh.
It works great on plastic car headlights, chrome wheels, etc.
You can even use it to fix up those scratched CDs and DVDs.

Here's some info that may help. http://mgmtargets.com/faqs#maintenance https://www.actiontarget.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/pt_Steel_Target_Resource_Guide.pdf The biggest problem is that your target has been heat treated and welding it will compromise the steel in the Heat Affected Zone. The same...

Technically, it's still a pile of aluminum parts. I know the history of the BD5 and many pilots died in them. With a stall speed of 85mph and top speed of 300mph, I can see where there's a lot of room for error. A sudden engine failure and then trying to maintain 85mph to keep the plane flying would...
