Yeah that old saying 'When it doesn't fit, Get a Bigger Hammer' isn't the best idea in the aerospace industry. Ha ha!

Learn as much as you can!! Ask any questions the leads at those places are full of knowledge!! If the one you've got is willing to teach you Take the Free Schooling!! I told you it's a whole new world of welding and you'll never want to go back to a normal shop, ha ha.

Re: cleaning electrode

From what I was taught what you're doing is the right thing. Breaking off the contaminated end and regrinding is the way to go, but it all depends on what you're welding, too. If you're working on a exhaust port tubing for an Apache helicopter you'll want to do make sure to do this, being a X-Ray pa...

Re: Argon/Helium Mix!!!

Can't say I've have the same problem your experiencing but when I mix He/Ar I like to go by the thickness of the material (the thicker the more He). Most of the time .125-.375 I like the normal 75% Ar/25% He. The denseness of He does have a large affect on a Ar regulator. If you get a chance at your...

Re: The True Meaning of Frustration.

Steve, I had a few people tell me at work that saying about "It's always easier to get forgiveness than permission." I was trying to do things the right way and follow the rules... I haven't seen that movie and if it's about stuff I'm breathing I'm not sure I want to, ha ha!! I do plan on ...

Re: The True Meaning of Frustration.

Okay I had something happen at work that truly got under my skin... One of the parts we weld at my shop is a long stainless water channel cover which is purged. It takes a good hour and a half if nothing goes wrong or you don't get bothered. After your finished welding this part your lungs are burni...

Re: welding a copper plate

Any time I've welded copper I added Helium to the mix. Had a job that was 12 1/4 inch copper pots (500 lbs each). We used 1/8 inch bar stock that where the same material so they matched. The really crappy part was grinding the welds and putting a directional grain on them... I was green for months! ...

Re: tig torch

Steph, No, I'm sure if you're really cranking the amps for a while having the rubber O ring wouldn't be the best idea. Personally, I only use the pyrex setup for smaller parts, titanium, plugs, or just hard to see spots. Not a everyday set up. Just a normal gas lens works for me 98% of the time. I d...

Re: tig torch

Steph, With the standard size gas saver I only have just the one set up. It was given to me from my weld supply store as a demo. But, with the large gas saver kit it came with a few smaller rubber O rings. I took off the metal ring on the standard size and popped on the rubber one. Now the pyrex cup...

Re: What type of welder should I get?

I have the Hobart 210 MVP (115/230v) and it works great. Here is the video Jody did that sold me on the machine. http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/hobart-welder-210mvp.html I'd say go buy a larger bottle than the small one shown just because it's $100 and you can find cheaper larger ones on Craigs...

Re: Tig Welding Carbon Steel

I would guess you're having a gas coverage problem. Your regulator might be stuck and your running really low or you might have a loose fitting somewhere. If those things check out to be okay then it could be oil on the parts, pinched collet, contaminated tungsten. Also, have you tried grinding off ...

Re: Vertical up or down?

Martin, Mick is right with learning them both. Personally, I like to weld up hill. Just seem to get a better bead and know it's burned in because I can see it much clearer. Also, most companies will have a weld procedure that will dictate how it's to be welded. If it's just a everyday part that need...

Steve, Where I work we make vacuum chambers for the computer chip industry. The chambers are made out of thick 304 stainless. The Blue Shield gas is used to bump up the heat much the same as Helium does for aluminum. The Blue Shield has it's ups and downs though like many things do. You go through a...

Hey just wanted to show you the family of Gas Lens' that I use for a WP20/9 torch. The standard size is my normal work horse but the others defiantly have there place and time to be used. Before anyone asks all the black soot on the #8 cup is from the Blue Shield gas (95% Argon, 5% Hydrogen) we use....

Ken,

I asked my welding supply friend about your question. He said the only thing you could do is change the head out
to a wp9. Kind of gets you half way to what you want. If you ask me that was very stupid of miller to hard wire that
torch.

Re: argon gas

I'd look on Craigslist and see if you can get a used tank. Doesn't matter what it is because you Can trade it in for a different gas. If you did buy a new one you're looking at anywhere from $150-300. Ballpark figures from what I've seen. Also, after you get the hang of Tig you should look into addi...

Hey Carl, Can't say I've had that problem before but didn't do much stainless welding when I lived in a higher humidity area (Florida). Out here in Arizona it's not really a problem. One thing I could say is if you haven't seen this video Jody did about a Gas Dryer, you might want to take a look and...

Re: The True Meaning of Frustration.

Hey Mick, Another thing that really gets me going is I worked in a sheet metal shop for a few years. They would be all over me about taking a extra 15-30 minutes on a part while other guys were doing them at rate or a little under. But, the kicker is my parts were well within tolerance (+/-.020) so ...
