Re: Welding aluminium tube to plate - tips?

Kiwi is right with moving up to the 1.5/1.6 at least. The vibration is going to wreck that thin stuff. It will be a tricky weld no matter what. That plate will need some heat so make sure your arc is focused mainly on the plate. Then move quickly toward the tube and get moving along your joint. You w...

Re: TIG Aluminum Question

How much are you paying for the Thermal Arc? It has a low duty cycle even at 150 amps. Go to the Everlast site and see the prices of their machines. You probably can get a stronger machine or at least one with a way better duty cycle to Tig with. 150 amps will work because the tubing is so small and...

Tungsten Mystery

:?: Would an aluminum expert please educate me on why when I use my 3/32 tungsten my torch runs a nice shiny bead. However if I change to a 5/32 tungsten I get dark digging gashes. All torch parts are brand new with both tungsten. Tungsten are new. Amps do not make a difference. The more silvery loo...

Aluminum issue

Power tig 250ex machine. I wanted to weld a 3/16 to 1/4 piece of aluminum plate to a piece of round tubing 3/16 thick wall. I set my machine back to ac with pulse at all the same settings I had when I was welding some 1/8 inch wall square tubing. I increased the amps of course. I grinded the metal a...

 My wife and I were out fishing and tied off to a big red bouy channel marker. While fishing I told my wife, those welds don't look that great! But I'm sure that marker has been out there for years.

Welding Shop Information

I built a welding shop on my property. It's 196sq ft with a peaked roof with the center beam 3 ft above the 14x14 shop. Hope that makes sense. I bought a 16000 btu ac,heat and humidifier portable unit. I insulated the ceiling with r38 and the walls with r13. I have a metal roof. I figured the ac uni...

Re: Aluminum Toolbox

Braehill, Thank you for the info and your time! I'll stick with stainless. Do you use the screws so your able to change the hinge in the future vs using rivets?

Re: Aluminum Toolbox

I am looking to rivet stainless hinges to aluminum. I understand the nylon or other material barriers behind the hinge but which of the suggested materials should i apply in the rivet holes and on the rivets? I found aluminum piano hinges, would these hold up as good as stainless so I don't have to ...

Filler rod for standard exhaust pipe

Quick question: What would be a good stainless steel filler rod for regular steel exhaust pipe? Or should I stick with er70s2? Thanks!

Re: Filler wire- steel

Minnesota Dave and Oscar, finally had time to trouble shoot my tig welder. I searched for leaks all outside the machine and nothing. It looked like a huge pain to open my welder so while looking at the end of my torch I decided to change the only piece I hadn't changed yet to get better flow. The pi...

Re: TIG machine advice

I would get the Everlast Powetig 325EXT. Its in the 2,000 dollar range, 245amps at 60% duty cycle. 320 amps at 35%. I have the Everlast 250EX and its duty cyle is 250amps @ 60%. My machine has a very nice smooth arc. I have been welding 1/4 wall steel square tubing at 230 amps and can continually we...

Re: Filler wire- steel

I've checked the line around my regulator and drying filter. I'll get the old soapy water out and check the rest. I misspoke, I grind to shiny bare metal with a flap disc and bevel the edges. Thanks for all the help. Let you all know tomorrow. A leak is definitely better then a machine issue.
