Video for newbs & maybe some not so newb
TIG electrode sharpening, stick out and gas flow rate I read a lot of comments on how sharp and how smooth and "dipping" but actually seeing the end results in close-up video would be a great help. How sharp is sharp? How smooth is smooth? How much stick-out is the correct amount for diffe...

Re: Stainless problem. Need help
I thought that might be a TIG Finger, ha ha! I thought about asking if you did the good old Flick the Regulator to see if it was stuck. Glad you got things back up and running. Are you using a Gas Lens or just a standard cup set up?? I have a Lincoln Square Wave 175 so no adjustments available. (Re...

Re: Stainless problem. Need help
Thanks  With your suggestions I went back and checked all gas settings & connections. It looks like two things happened. My big tank went empty even though it was reading 200 - 300 psi. Then when I moved the regulator to my back-up small tank I aparently managed to shut the flow meter o...

Stainless problem. Need help
Background: Been welding stainless exhaust system for hot rod. No problems other than my inability to hold the tip real close (combination of hand tremmor and eye sight problems) to get a nice small bead. Finished 15 butt joints with this quality. http://i41.tinypic.com/35iun3q.jpg Was getting low o...

Re: SS purge gas test
Thanks for the link. That splitter would work.
Back purge for tube is pretty easy and you really don't need much gas.
If you use 10 CFH on 2.5" dia tube you will do a complete purge every minute per foot length if I did the math correctly.

Re: SS purge gas test
Mick Thanks for the reply. I am sure the use of some optimum gas just as using optimun welder settings for pulse, ramp etc would be desirable in critical applications however I was just trying to get to the proverbial "good enough" for a home built exhaust system. My TIG is an old Lincoln ...

SS purge gas test
OK first off I know these welds look like crap. To hot, wrong TIG angle, not consistent tip distance etc, BUT I haven't done SS tube for a couple of years and then I only did about 20" total. Also I have some eye problems now due to injury and permanent scar in one eye which cause serious depth...

Re: What does backpurging give?
Mick Thanks for quick reply. Am off to supplier this AM and maybe will get fittings to be able to try the Ar/Co2 and also to try a split Ar setup where I have a 2nd valve to reduce the flow. Alternately if I can keep the but joint fit tight enough maybe I will not leak a lot of gas. I will capture s...

Re: What does backpurging give?
I'm also doing a SS header but really want to purge backside. When taking course at Lincoln I saw just how nice a SS weld can be. However at home I don't have endless equipment. I'm thinking of using my 75/25 ArCo2 cylinder from my Mig machine and setting the flow rate real low as I can purge the le...

Can you post a picture of what the weld looks like from back side after you weld but before they polish?

Large Dia gas lens nozzle
I have seen a couple different large dia nozzles used in some of your videos. One was CNI #12 and you added a SS screen in the nozzle. It wasn't clear but I assume you used a standard large dia gas lens plus the large nozzle and you added a SS screen in the nozzle. You also mentioned using Scotchbri...

Do you really like your job?
I really identified with Jody's comments about looking at welds on the lighthouse handrail and checking out the welds on the aluminum tanker truck next to him on the highway or the bikes at Walmart. He says "I am into this stuff." I am a retired tire design engineer and I find myself alway...

Finger Amp control
Have older Lincoln SquareWave 175 w/standard air cooled 17 torch. Will be doing some out of position welding and foot control just won't work. Any suggestions on button control for this application? So far I can find button control for Miller or slide control for Lincoln.
