Re: TIG vs. MIG for hardness & Silicon Bronze

Any additional thoughts on the difference in shielding gases affecting the hardness of the weld deposit?

Anyone with experience with Silicon Bronze? I have see "Restolad" do some cool stuff on cars with it using a TIG torch in his You Tube videos. He sure seems to know his trade!

Re: TIG vs. MIG for hardness & Silicon Bronze

Thanks guys for your input. The annealing aspect is interesting. I always thought that oxy-fuel put way too much heat into the metal and caused more warping and distortion. It would definitely be a broader heat. I think I have heard the same argument before concerning chrome moly tubular fuselage pi...

TIG vs. MIG for hardness & Silicon Bronze

I just watched a you tube video by Miller Welding where they had Detroit Speed and Engineering doing a promo video for their welding equipment. In the video, one of the guys said they prefer to TIG weld their body panels on cars because the weld is softer and easier to sand and shape. I asked them t...

Re: Grinding wheels for tungsten

Richard, We just have a DeWalt pedestal grinder. I am trying to come up with a light to rig up over the unit. I don't know why there are not more accessory items available for these units. I would also like to adapt something to catch dust at the rear of each wheel. To snap them off, I just grind a ...

Man Richard! Talk about me trying to re-invent the wheel! lol The info in your post and the video is the exact ones I bought. You order the 8725A81 wheel and just specify the grit. I think the same person that showed it to Mr. Tig is the fellow that told me about it. Glad to see others were impresse...

Re: Welding schools in Toronto

I live about an hour from Toronto and have heard of this school, but do not have any first hand knowledge of them. A friends son is enrolled in another private welding school in Toronto and he said the tuition is around $11,000.00. He has been there since September and is just now starting to get a ...

Re: Finding it hard to see with speedglas

We have the basic models of Speedglas helmets at our school and they are a fixed #11 ADF. They work okay, but most guys eventually buy their own with variable shades. I have the 9100xx and I like shade 10 for the stuff we do. The 9100xx has a larger viewing area. I just won a new Linde MISON helmet ...

I agree Steve. This place is special. I don't get on here as often recently, but the info is always solid. Re: Trouble with 6010

The beads don't look all that bad for 6010 to me...especially the later ones you posted. One thing that surprised me was that a small Miller Maxstar 140 or 150 will not run 6010 electrodes at all. We could not even get the arc to light up. A friend told me his 150 would not run them and I couldn't b...

Grinding wheels for tungsten

Hey folks, just thought I would share something with you. I was looking for a better alternative for grinding tungsten on a pedestal grinder. The silicon carbide wheels just wear out too fast and become dangerous once they get a groove worn in them. I recalled a friend at Lincoln Electric had mentio...

I'm thinking the step up transformer might be your best bet if your unit does not have multiple taps. Your machine is not very portable, so an added heavy transformer shouldn't be too much of an extra burden. lol

Re: Shop table

Really nice table there. The workmanship looks excellent! The only thing I would suggest differently, is to leave the top unpainted. Once you start using it, the paint will wear and chip and look like hell. If you are welding on it, grounding will be an issue in some cases. I built one similar last ...

We have the Powermax45 unit and I have a filter/moisture separator at the compressor and then another one right at the inlet to the unit. I think the main point here will be how long the consumables last. So far, so good.

Re: 7018 vertical up

Okay, in re-reading your post, I think I did indeed miss your point! If you whip a 7018 rod, there is a risk that you will weld back over the heavier slag and trap some of this slag into the weld bead. It is also the reason that you don't usually want to run vertical down with 7018. In most cases, t...
