I wanted to let you guys know that I did try the root using methanol for the mix and it did help a little. Most of my problem was I was too slow on the root pass. If you did not remove the mill scale that will be the cause of your problem.

If you need to test on the 1" plate with a backing strip I would go with the maximum gap allowed this will keep the electrode from getting stuck on the bevels. Arc blow plays a big factor when you are deep in the groove. Remember the bevel for the D1.1 is 22.5 degrees it is not as forgiving as ...

I have been testing at a paper mill on 2" 304 SS pipe. We are using solar flux for the backing. They have us mixing it with alcohol. It seems very common to get one or two small spots of sugar on the root(the CWI does not seem concerned). If we used methanol instead of alcohol would that fix th...
