Re: Help with aluminum project

Thought I'd post an update after all the helpful replies I got to my original question. First to Ozflo, I'm working on a FHC. I've already built a '53 XK120 roadster and got bored after I finished it so decided to improve on all I learned building that one and do a coupe. I'm waiting for the 4943 ro...

Re: Help with aluminum project

Weldmonger, Thanks for the suggestions. The Diversion welder does not have the capability to adjust AC balance so I'm stuck with it's natural settings although I've never had any problems with that, so I'll have to make do. I do think you might have something with the ground issue. On the repair pie...

Help with aluminum project

I'm restoring a '53 Jaguar and am doing a repair on the hood (they call it a bonnet, but I'm and American so I call it a hood). The lower front opening for the grill is in really bad shape so I'm building a replacement panel for that area. I'm using .060 5052 aluminum and I'm having a terrible time ...

Re: Soldering chromed brass

Thanks Josh
Will the flux you're suggesting work on chrome? The flux I tried didn't appear to affect the surface at all.

Re: Soldering chromed brass

I did some more testing and found the discoloration probably will not be the big issue. I tested some chrome parts at 500 deg with no discoloration, certainly high enough for most of the lead free solders. The problem is getting it to stick. I tried some Oatey lead free solder with their #95 flux on...

Soldering chromed brass

I'm restoring a '53 Jaguar and one of the pieces I have to do is the grill. It's a chrome brass frame with chromed brass ribs. I've done this before by stripping the chrome, silver soldering the ribs in, and then having it chromed. I have since found the factory chromed all the pieces first and sold...

Looking for opinion on machine purchase

I am need of a plasma cutter to finish out my welding/cutting equipment. I currently have a Miller Diversion 165 TIG, Millermatic 211 MIG, and an old Miller buzz box stick machine that I don't use since I got the 211. The equipment is used for hot rod fabrication, so not a lot of heavy work. I watch...

Re: TIG WELDING - BANDSAW BLADES, IMPORT CAR FENDERS

Just a comment on the band saw blades. Many, many years ago, before the days of resistance welders on the saw, I welded lots of blades with silver solder. Need a fixture to hold the blade in position. Grind the blade with a 15-30 degree angle to get a longer weld. Easy to grind flat and really strong.

Re: Looking for help in identifying electrode material

Thanks for the reply. I've heard of jet rod, and maybe that's what it was. But I did run some vertical welds and the rod did very well there also, so I don't think it was meant to be flat only. I'll check into the jet rod, but if anyone else has any additional ideas I'd appreciate hearing what they ...

Looking for help in identifying electrode material

I am a hobby welder and have a question concerning a 1/8" rod I recently used on my AC stick welder. I have been using Lincoln 6011 rods and have had reasonable results but I found a box of rods recently that had been stored for no telling how long and I gave them a try. They were the best runn...

Question about self darkening helmet

I'm a hobby welder and purchased one of the Northern Tool self darkening helmets based on the recommendation on this site. I have been extremely pleased with it for stick and MIG welding, but am having a problem with some TIG work I'm trying to do. I'm welding some fairly thin steel and have the mac...

Electrode question

I've just started using TIG and I've noticed that lanthanated electrodes come in various percentages.. Mainly 1.5% and 2%. Is there any rule as to which one to use. I'm primarily welding 1/8" steel, but also do some aluminum.
