Re: Stupid n00b soldering questions

This is starting to sound, unfortunately, like the 'if you have to ask, you shouldn't try it' type of advice. But being hardheaded I just tried anyway on a test spot on the new tank. The coating isn't traditional zinc galvanized, it's something else, and melts very easy even with only a little pocke...

Re: Stupid n00b soldering questions

I don't think paint will survive on the inside of the little sump box exposed to the fuel, will it? I'm much less worried about rust on the outside, but once I've tinned the inside of the sump, doing the outside too isn't much more work. The new tank is coated inside and out with whatever new steel ...

Stupid n00b soldering questions

No, really, actual soldering, not a derogatory term for poor welding skills. :D I need to know what supplies I need to solder a steel sump onto the bottom of a (new, unused) fuel tank. I've done enough reading to know that no two people recommend the same stuff for the same soldering job, everybody ...

Re: TIG Welding Aluminum with DC?

Try it and see what happens. LOL

It just melts a giant wad of aluminum, hidden underneath a big bubble of oxide and it's impossible to work with with the oxide present. That's what the AC is for, prevents the oxide from covering the puddle.

Re: Source for small qty of 5/8" stainless tube?

Cool, thanks, looking around the interwebs a bit looks like the local hydraulics shop should have or be able to get what I need. Here's a pic of what I'm copying. I don't feel bad about stealing the idea as nobody sells a pre-modded tank for my car. Otherwise I'd be happy to just buy one. I plan to ...

Source for small qty of 5/8" stainless tube?

I'm doing a custom gas tank pickup/return setup (it's a brand new tank, never seen a drop of gas, so just before it starts, no, I'm in no danger of blowing myself up) and would ideally like to pick up some tubing local. .625OD .058-.065 wall, grade doesn't really matter so 304ss welded tube would be...

Re: welding cast iron and steel

No offense taken ;) , and I'd definitely agree with assessing this with an overabundance of caution IF it were a new build-up from scratch, or totally replacing the factory tubes in the original cast diff housing (it happens, but rarely and the people who dive into those sorts of things tend to know...

Re: welding cast iron and steel

This isn't as critical as some seem to think, the tubes are pressed in (tight!!) and plug welded from the factory, and with big HP sometimes the diff housing can break the plug welds and rotate on the axle tubes. When that happens yes the axle is junk, but nothing falls out onto the ground or anythi...

Re: Aluminium finishing

Green scotchbrite. The dish scrubbers with sponge on one side work best, wet - brand new ones are a bit too aggressive, use one that's broken in and a little 'fuzzy' and it gives a nice flat finish with no visible scratches. A new pad dry, new pad wet, broken-in pad dry, will all give you a differen...

Re: How's about an update on the 256

I have the little one, 200 DX, and man, I hate that foot pedal with the burning rage of a thousand suns. I put in a much much softer spring and tweaked the pots, changed out most of the flimsy hardware and added a bunch of bracing. It's almost usable now. The HF on mine worked OK out of the box, I p...

So guys, how do you go about finding a local place that will sell hobby-shop quantities to walk in customers? All I can find in my yellow pages are industrial/structural type places that will design a building for you and then come out and put it together. Is there some secret codeword I don't know ...

Re: Welding, cutting torch, and meteorites!

Jon, I realize you're 'casting a wide net' to get samples from where they come from in the real world, but have you considered going the other direction as well - renting/buying/borrowing a plasma cutter setup to get your own samples? I can see how it might help, even if only to act as a control so ...

Re: Welding, cutting torch, and meteorites!

Yeah yeah, I get that - but why's there never any chunks of coal in the slag? I'm assuming the slag was 'made' in the furnace, and not brought in on the truck that delivered the loads of coal. Is it because all the coal is burned off before the slag had a chance to accumulate?

Re: Welding, cutting torch, and meteorites!

Yes, that's my best guess as well. I live in an old house that used to have a coal furnace, and my backyard is absolutely full of the stuff in the pic. The only thing that still leaves me with a tiny flicker of doubt about it being coal slag is that they have areas that are obviously iron (highly ma...

Your issue isn't the lack of a foot pedal, it's the lack of high frequency arc starting. Little machines like that will only do scratch start.

I don't know, and I don't know how you would go about finding out exactly how to hack that piece to make it work without buying one and poking it with a multimeter. As it's a replacement part meant to go in something else, there probably isn't any published data on what its made of. That $200 kit is...

Search ebay for these item numbers...
370474766469
290521971299
230478425019
etc.
Contact the sellers, almost a certainty they all have more units on hand than what they have listed.

Hell, if you don't mind being creative, you could even use the guts from a bunch of junkyard alternators.
