Re: Silicon Bronze brazing over chrome
Thanks. Not sure how I would really clean the inside. The crack is thin and I can't get that far in from the openings at the ends. How would you approach that? Maybe squirt some acetone in? Stainless is a poor conductor of heat, but nothing like carbide. I thought I'd clean and grind away the insid...

Silicon Bronze brazing over chrome
Hi, I have a crack in the joint of the exhaust on my '48 Indian Chief. The exhaust is chromed. It is on an edge and the metal is fairly thin, so I'm wondering if I can (1) TIG braze it (silicon bronze) over the chrome, (2) carefully grind off a small amount of the chrome and braze it, or (3) grind i...

Re: Very strange splattering problem - help!
Problem solved! It was the fan from the welder that interfered with the argon flow. That is why it worked on another piece that was in a slightly different location. I already made an air shield because the welder exhaust is next to my welding bench. But since this piece is big, I moved the table ou...

Very strange splattering problem - help!
Background: I'm making a table out of 1-3/4" square stainless tube, 1/8" wall thickness (it will support a heavy wood top). I capped each of the four legs on both sides, with the caps brazed with less current instead of welded to avoid melting the edges. That worked perfectly. So I went t...

Re: Settings for TIG silicon bronze brazing
Update: I spent some time brazing today. Really glad I did, and the tips here are excellent. I got to the point where I could lay a really nice bead on a plate, or a butt joint. Inside corner joints were harder for me and they turned out passable but not great on the table I'm working on. Generally ...

Settings for TIG silicon bronze brazing
I'm making a table out of 1.25" x 0.25" cold-rolled steel. I welded the base and top and they turned out great. For the four horizontal posts that join the base and top, I decided I want to try to braze them. The reason is the joints will be highly visible and I don't want to burn into the...

Re: Threaded or through-hole fixture plate?
I'm going to order the Crummy plate. Really nice and the price seems reasonable for what it is. Jody uses one on some of his videos. It is14 x 16 x 1 with either 5/8" through holes or 1/2-13 threaded holes, 2" on center. With the latter, I could also pick up one of the Amazon mill hold-dow...

Threaded or through-hole fixture plate?
I'm gonna order a fixture plate. What is your preference - threaded or through-hole, and why? Thanks!

Re: Help tacking and welding stainless thin tube to thick pl
What type of tungsten (2% Thoriated?) and how sharp are you making it? Is the tungsten clean enough for brain surgery or is there contamination on it? Goes without saying the parts need to be very clean. Also, did you clean the inside of the tubing, because if you did not, that dirt inside there wi...

Help tacking and welding stainless thin tube to thick plate
Hi, I'm new to the forum, and have only been TIG welding for about 5 years as a hobby. I am working with a new machine (Lincoln TIG 200), after upgrading from an Eastwood 200 DC. I'm welding a 1/8" stainless plate (say 3" x 5") to the end of a 1.25" diameter 16 gauge stainless tu...

Re: Lincoln Tig 200 Square Wave, anyone using?
I just bought mine a week ago. I had been using an Eastwood TIG 200 DC for the last five years as my first welder, and I wanted to upgrade so I could weld aluminum, and also to a better welder in general. The Eastwood isn't a bad welder and it did the job reliably, but the Lincoln is a whole other l...
