Re: HF start, is it an EMP in the waiting?

High frequency used with TIG and the EMF created by all electric welding can affect items in the vicinity, pacemakers are the common example. That's interesting. I have not heard about any bystanders whose pacemakers were affected by HF start or welding in general. That would make anyone with a pac...

Re: HF start, is it an EMP in the waiting?

High frequency used with TIG and the EMF created by all electric welding can affect items in the vicinity, pacemakers are the common example. Never had issues with vehicles in the area, worked with banks of 400A HF start pulsed TIG machines. Trucks, vans and forklifts all came near with no issue. Do...

Re: 7018 Odd Running Characteristics & Residue

Well been having a look, seems that AWS A5.5 lists EXX18-G electrodes as general low-alloy steel, and the E7018-1 H4 R electrode is from AWS A5.1, for carbon steels, so they are indeed different enough to not be directly comparable. Still, to fuel the fire... The Lincoln Kryo 1, a 7018-G, datasheet ...

Re: 7018 Odd Running Characteristics & Residue

those beads don't look anything like cellulose rods. Suppose I meant that they have a very punchy and aggressive arc. have you run G rods before? just having a quick look, G rods seam to be for marine steel. i know boats can have some very specific steel grades used. i'm guessing the rods are made ...

Re: 7018 Odd Running Characteristics & Residue

just looking at the rod specs shows they are quite different rods, they are not similar at all. i would not call it good or bad due to comparing it with a different rod. you really need to compare it to another G rated rod. Yeah, you do make a good point, may run into another brand's rods one day. ...

Re: 7018 Odd Running Characteristics & Residue

I would say the flux is contaminated or otherwise compromised. Either use them or not. Not much you can do short of trying to re-bake them at 700-900°F. Figured contamination was a possibility, just odd that they exhibit this straight out a vacpac. Tried them baked out then left to settle around 11...

7018 Odd Running Characteristics & Residue

So having a weird issue with some rods I have had for a while. The rods in question are Filarc 76S E7018-G, compared with some ESAB 55.00 E7018-1H4 R 1/8" rods I got a sample pack of. The Filarc rod runs pretty badly, the arc is not settled at all and seems to be quite aggresive, and leaves an ...

Re: Welding 4340 to 4130

The plots below, from here , should give you an idea of how the properties of a 4130 weld can change with heat treatment. If you want an indication of what could happen then I hope this helps. In this instance, welding with matching filler requires some work to get right, hence why this is normally ...

Re: my first stick beads

I agree with what Oscar is saying on the thickness. For a practice plate to run beads on I prefer thicker, up to and beyond 3/8", as it gives a bit more of a heat sink and distorts less. For butt or fillet welds I try a bit of everything, though the 3/16" to 5/16" mentioned was where ...

Re: Welding 4340 to 4130

Fun. Time for you to get the etchants and hardness testing machine out, along with some other toys, if you are really interested in the mechanical properties. Looks like Eureka 130 is a 4130 rod so you will need to see what it does when heat treated, which is the way to maximum strength. Some intere...

Ha, thanks for the link! Just found these again while looking for something else, if anyone is interested, some tables that show thickness limits in relation to preheat, hydrogen and material composition. Taken from BS EN 1011-2:2001, worth a read if you are interested in weldability of steels. Can ...

Re: my first stick beads

Yes, I would let it cool a bit more before starting the next bead. You can (NEVER do this for anything other than practice pieces) dunk the piece in a bucket of water every three or four beads. This cools the metal down, to under 100°C at least, giving headspace to let it heat up again. If you are s...

There is, of course, a lot that goes into determining susceptibility, have a look here for some information o...

Re: Can anyone identify these welds on this Jet Engine

Interesting pattern, thanks for sharing! Given other peoples suggestions, I'm going for resistance seam welding. Looks very similar to some other examples, you can see how one weld nugget overlaps the next, with some material spread over the preceding bead, giving the horseshoe shape.

Re: D1.1 4g gap

Hmmm, don't have a copy of D1.1 handy to check, but if the table shown is correct for you application then a 60° groove would not be acceptable on a drawing. You may get away with a 60° fit up if the drawing called for a 50° to 55° groove, obtained from a nominal 45°. How you could interpret it, sta...
