Re: Welding 1/2" to 1/16" Alum
If it's not going to be subjected to heat, You could even consider Devcon Aluminum Putty. For that, or even still if you're going to weld it, you'd be adding a counterbore to the radius'ed part, with enough length to press the tubing inside it. On that diameter, press fit should be real easy. From ...

Re: Welding 1/2" to 1/16" Alum
what is the "thing" going to be and do? You can't find 4 inch tubing with a heavier wall? Can you design an interference fit for the tubing into the plate, since you don't need strength for support? It is a tubing flange that secures flexible tubing to a flat surface for air flow. Standar...

Re: Welding 1/2" to 1/16" Alum
Got a picture of what you're fabricating? No. I haven't made the part yet. Don't want to go down this path if I am not able to weld it up. May have to use a larger billet and make it all on the lathe if I don't think I can weld it. It is expensive and a huge material waste if I have to go down that...

Re: Welding 1/2" to 1/16" Alum
Ok, the drawing got me thinking that I don't need that big of a chunk of metal. The drawing also includes the flange (forgot it in the last pic). If I cut an angle, I can leave WAY less mass near the weld area. I can make that land maybe 3/32 or 1/8 to reduce the mass near the weld. Would like advic...

Re: Welding 1/2" to 1/16" Alum
I've read through all of the posts, and still can't quite understand the parts and joints you are talking about. A picture/drawing is worth 1000 words when you're looking for advice. Post something graphic if you want accurate advice. Most people here would easily spend 5 minutes or more of their t...

Re: Welding 1/2" to 1/16" Alum
You are saying the 1/2" plate is really a little round piece with a 1/2" diameter and 1/2" thickness? The tubing is 1/2" diameter? The tubing is 4" X 1/16" round. The plate is round, 5" OD, 3.932" ID and 1/2" thick. This piece has a 1/2" radius mill...

Welding 1/2" to 1/16" Alum
I am still new to Tig and not quite ready to start practicing on Al yet. However, I have an application that I would like to start practicing for. I would like to weld a 1/16" wall alum tube onto a 1/2" alum plate, I could either make this a standard T joint or create a socket for the tube...

Re: Full penetration weld question
Thanks for the guidance on this. I have a Primeweld 225, so plenty of amps. I have been using 120 for all of my practice and plan to use that for this also. I think I will experiment with both the 035 gap and the bevel with land on these. Figure it is more good practice. On some of my practice butt ...

Full penetration weld question
Hobby welder, new to tig here and making my welding table. I will be tig welding 2 - 1/8" 2 X 2 Tubes together and would like a full penetration weld for strenght. I will use a 1/16 or 3/32 rod to leave a gap. Do I need to bevel, or will I be ok with this small thickness. I have done a few prac...

Re: Beginner with WSE 200 - Should I Upgrade?
You'll be happy with the new welder, but you'll probably decide later, it wasn't necessary. Your probably right. I am sure it is not a big issue for someone with experience. Being self-taught and at the beginning, things like these are impediments to learning. I have to go read posts and watch vide...

Re: Beginner with WSE 200 - Should I Upgrade?
What do you mean no display for the amps? :? Both the machine and the pedal simply had a knob for amps with a bunch of tick marks and no numbers. Most welders that I see have an LCD display that provides the amount of amps selected, but this machine didn't have that. Simply no way to set the amps d...

Re: Beginner with WSE 200 - Should I Upgrade?
Thanks for the input. I ended up getting the Primeweld 225. I was really struggling with the crappy pedal and not having a read out of the amps. Mine was adjusted at the foot pedal and had not idea how the knob related to actual amps. I wanted to have more repeatability once I found settings that wo...

Re: Yeswelder 250P AC/DC Foot Pedal Question
IMG_0666.JPG I bought a YesWelder 250 Tig and want to replace the pedal since it is so stiff. If i buy a pedal with a 5 pin connector can I wire it to match the yeswelder pedal? I have attached a picture of the inside of the yeswelder pdeal. It is not just the wiring. Different manufacturers want d...

Re: Beginner - Is this too much heat
Ok. Top 4 four welds in this prc are a bit more representative of my welds and I did not cool them with the towel. Surprisingly, I was able to do these by dragging my torch hand. Also forced myself to hold the torch very lightly. Still a long way to go, but able to do it now without the crazy starts...

Re: Beginner - Is this too much heat
Either long arc, or too little heat making you move too slow. I have spent most of my practice up till now focused on keeping a short arc and still spend most of my attention on the arc length. My research indicated that this is the hardest part, hence all of the attention early on. I believe that ...

Re: Beginner - Is this too much heat
Looking at all of the pics, it kind of looks like you're cycling between too much heat and not quite enough heat on the different welds. Just keep running beads to become better at splitting that difference. Some of your welds, especially the first pic you posted, do look a little scummy and grey i...

Re: Beginner - Is this too much heat
I see the opposite. Your bead is pretty “round”, indicating too little heat to drive the weld into the plate. Is there a picture of the backside laced in there? If so, there’s no evidence of heat or weld on the backside, so again, not too much heat. You don’t indicate how much amperage you’re using...

Beginner - Is this too much heat
I have some experience with Stick and Mig, but only a couple of hours into Tig. I feel that I have been getting better at holding a tight arc, but still working on proper travel speed and bead width. I am wondering if this picture shows whether or not I am putting too much heat into the material. Th...

Beginner with WSE 200 - Should I Upgrade?
I am a hobby welder and have some experience with Stick and MIG. A while back, I bought an inexpensive WSE200 Tig welder and just started learning TIG. I will mostly be working with steel and Alum and likely some thinner material. This machine seems to work pretty well, but it has no frequency contr...
