Re: AWS D15.1

What info are you looking for? D15.1 is qualification document for people used in the rail industry. I view it as the companion to D1.1. We use it at the loco builder I work for. General qualification pieces are done for sheet metal (usually 3/16") and then 3/4" plate. It's up to the build...

Re: Height adjustable welding table

That seems to be really nicely executed. Nice job!

How far does it move?

Probably best to attach your ground lead to the table top, rather than run current through the risers?

Re: Travel Speed for E 7018 electrode

Saad, AWS D1.1 gives you some prequalified WPS information in section three. For grad school work, I would recommend that you get a copy of the standard* and spend at least half a day looking it over. Draw a few conclusions and then review separately with a skilled welder and a weld engineer. You ne...

I feel your pain.

My "Buffalo Fan and Forge" drill press is older than I.

I still recall the Oh-shit when I put that 5/16" divot in the table.

Sand blast 15 minutes Hydro test 30 minutes Paint 5 minutes I agree. Even if you cut that in half, I doubt a big company can fit that into a normal overhead labor rate. Around here, private mechanics have an overhead rate minimum of $80/hr. I think Louie said he works in Accounting? Am I missing so...

Gas Prices - May 2021

Fwiw, Airgas visit in Erie, PA on 5/27. $19.50 for ~120cf oxygen refill, $36.63 for a ~120 cf 75/25 Ar/CO2 refill, $8.50 hazmat shipping, $6 to the guv’ner and $40 to recert an O2 tank last hydro'd in ‘76. I am stunned that they can sand blast, paint and hydro-test a bottle for $40. Is this their pu...

Stock some coupons, say 4" x 4" x 1/8" in mild steel and aluminum. Require a demo with a lap joint in one metal and a butt joint in the other. They can choose which metal. You can put out samples. If they can reasonably duplicate your work, they can use the toys. Shoot anyone that mak...

Re: New here looking for some help

Good morning, I live in eastern PA. Neither of my local scrap yards will sell to the public. The next best option is to look on Craigslist and Facebook for people that sell odds and ends. Those are the cheapest but what you get is often mystery metal. Then you cost up to buying drops from a steel di...

MHO, I just drew a simple sketch in MS paint, saved as .jpg. Then, below the box where you type your reply there is a box headed "Options" the next tab to the right is "Upload Attachment." Once there you choose a file, then use next button to right to upload. I did a quick look a...

Very nice. I might need to take a crack at some of these. I salvaged a sheet of 4xx from an old trash can and keep finding new uses for it. On a side note, your art reminds me of some that the PennDOT crews do in their spare time with retired road signs. This shot is about 5% of the display in Meadv...

Re: Advice on welding a 7m span

JustGus, Since you have a meter of extra SHS, cut off a 10cm chunk and trim two corners and reweld to make a nice square backing tube that is 50 - 2*2.5 = 45mm square. Maybe make that backer tube 44mm square so it fits in easy. You can slide that into the end of each joint and make a nice full pen b...

Re: Lincoln Tig 200 Square Wave, anyone using?

I picked mine up used about 18 months ago. It is a nice machine for home use. I am pretty happy with it. Some stream of conscious thoughts follow. On the stick side, I have used it with 6011 for a few times for some TJ frame repair and a brush hog job at my Mom's. I have also played around a little ...

Re: Oldest machines you have run?

I took metal shop as a freshman in high school. That allowed me to start using our Forney AC for farm repairs and various toys. Sounds like the one referred to by Mr.Payne. It wasn't a great welder. I quickly started using the pto driven machine that offered DC. I'm not all that old, this would have...

Re: 2g

We do a 2G in heavy plate for D15.1 but are required to place a stop-start in the middle of the root pass.

Its always a fine line between filling the groove and excessive reinforcement.

The worst part for me is getting impatient to start the next stringer then my work gets too hot.

Re: Old Girl Handled Business!!

Have you considered changing that vise bolt to a stud? You might be able to braze a piece of threaded rod into the partial socket, then braze the broken chunk on the exposed edge of the stud and to the fracture surface? I think all-thread is available in both Gr2 and Gr5, so choose wisely. Cheers, A...

Scored ... a Sz # 1 - 20CuFt 75/25 replacement, If this gets a little small for you, there is a guy between Cleveland & Akron on FB & CL who sells bottles full of mixed gas pretty reasonable. I think I paid $150 for my 120 cubic foot bottle. After you use for a while you'll figure out what ...

Thanks to this thread, my SSC Touch 4 is out for delivery today. I am pretty excited as the foot pedal has not been my friend. Even when working on my bench, I often end up standing up. Maybe my balance sucks, but I feel pretty wobbly standing on left foot, driving with right. I cannot imagine how a...

Nice looking work.

How thick is the tube you added the gusset to?

Is it fatigue cracking from bouncing up and down on the road, or is it hitting something?
