Re: Today’s Humor-My first TIG Experience

Thanks guys. Being strictly stick before, I pretty much just knocked off rust and debris, then went for it. I never realized how milscale affects welds.

I’m self taught and forums like this one plus YouTube are a huge help.

Funny how the videos for beginners on YouTube never talk about cleaning.

Re: Today’s Humor-My first TIG Experience

The angle iron shows millscale, that’s not clean. When people say clean, they mean grind the surface to a bright shiny, metal surface then chemically cleaned. Interesting. How do I chemically clean it after I grind it? What chemicals are used? I'm used to stick welding where milscale is not an issu...

Re: Today’s Humor-My first TIG Experience

To TIG any type of metal, the metal must be CLEAN. Your first two examples, that is trash condition material. Consider about 1amp/0.001 of material thickness for steel. 4mm would need the full 160 amps. 1mm would want about 40amps. For gas flow, 2x cup size is a good rule of thumb. A #5 cup, run 8-...

Today’s Humor-My first TIG Experience

New TIG arrived today. Tech didn't speak a word of English, as expected. He fired up the machine before he connected any of the leads. Then proceeded to build the torch while leaning against the welding table he had already connected the ground to. He couldn't get the tungsten to fit because the fit...

Re: Welpro TIG200P AC/DC

imho the ability to save settings is not a big deal for a hobbyist. commercial it would be handy and a lot of the good machines have that. i would have taken the other analog machine and found a foot pedal. Can I swap out the 2 pin connector for a 3 pin? If so, how? I’m pretty handy with electrical...

Welpro TIG200P AC/DC

The TIG I had went back to the dealer. It really wasn't what I wanted. The Welpro TIG200P AC/DC is what I wanted but could not be obtained because like everything here, it's made in China and China was not shipping anything. Plus Thailand had a lock-down on all imports. The shipping has started agai...

Re: Tig the Thai Way

What part of Thailand are you in? Don't know if you are near a Hardware House but the one I used to go to had a good selection of welders. Yes they do. It’s one of my favorites. But, none of the stores are close. With the Covid quarantine, I’m limited to looking online, which is how I found the vid...

Foot Pedals

I know some of the pro’s don’t feel a foot pedal is necessary, that’s understandable. However, I’m a hobbiest. Given that, I’ve found a machine that will make use of a foot pedal. The reason I know it will take the foot pedal is because it has the foot pedal connector and hand button connector as we...

Yes they do and I’m getting one.

That video was their advertisement I had not seen for the machine I have. Fortunately it’s still in the box.

Tig the Thai Way

Thought you folks would enjoy seeing how TIG is done here. This is why their machines typically have no adjustable power once you start welding. It's not needed.

Re: My New TIG

i doubt its a foot pedal capable machine. its a basic machine. switch can work ok. at least it has that. i'm assuming its HF. unfortunately it doesn't have down slope. you can use down slope and hand switch to control heat to a degree. Does lack of downslope mean it’s scratch start? no. they usuall...

My New TIG

Here's the TIG. Thumb switch on the torch appears to be strictly on/off.

Would a foot pedal be of benefit? If so, what capabilities should it have?

Another question

Yesterday I posted about 2 TG AC/DC 200amp machines. I picked those because their power range was 10 - 200amps.
Their larger cousins are 25-250amp.

Is the lower 10amp that important or should I go for the 250amp high end power.

All have a 60% rating.

Need a Ton of Advic

For those that missed my intro, I’m in Thailand. There’s basically one brand of welder here, Welpro and it’s subsidiaries. Anyone ever hear of it? Anyway, I’m wanting to make the leap from stick to TIG. AC/DC in fact. First, understand they have no clue what a foot pedal is here. There are 2 options...

Hi from Thailand

Howdy folks, I’m an American retired in Thailand. I decided to make use of my retirement by making anything my immigration can come up with. I’ve always been a hands on kind of guy. My name is from previous lifetime hobby. I was a firearms collector, trainer, shooter, and repairer. So, now I’m playi...
