Re: Settings for TIG silicon bronze brazing

Seems like a great shop, and that box art is really cool. That alone makes me want to buy from a shop like that. I do wonder if the name has hurt their sales at all over the past year or so. I reeled back for a second when I saw it. Little things like that can sometimes have an impact, unfortunately...

Re: Settings for TIG silicon bronze brazing

Set your pedal amperage to about 10-20% lower than what you would need for steel. This is still a little high but doesn’t hurt to have some extra when you need it. Light up on the base metal and quickly form just the tiniest pin prick of a puddle. Then back it off a hair to where the puddle solidifi...

Re: Do I really need a water cooled torch?

I have 2 of the HTP Arctic Chill coolers and love them. I think they were $500 or so direct from HTP. Why risk an ebay/amazon no-name/no-support brand that might fail within a year? Spend the extra $200. You won't regret it. I run a 50/50 mix of distilled water and the pink RV antifreeze in them. I ...

Re: Do I really need a water cooled torch?

No, you probably don't need one. But technically I don't NEED them either, but wouldn't be without my 20's. They really do make things much more comfortable in terms of both size and temperature. A water cooler (at least a quality one) is mostly just a one-time cost, and the water cooled torches are...

Re: Tungsten Arc Stability

I like the CK layzr tungsten for really thin metal. Has the smoothest arc starts for me at low amperage on my machines. I use 2% lanth for everything else, and 3/32" usually 99% of the time, but I have layzr tungsten in 1/16" and 0.040". I've also found that using the smallest cup siz...

Also consider upping your amps once you get the polarity sorted. 100A is quite low for 4mm thick steel.

I've read through all of the posts, and still can't quite understand the parts and joints you are talking about. A picture/drawing is worth 1000 words when you're looking for advice. Post something graphic if you want accurate advice. Most people here would easily spend 5 minutes or more of their ti...

For the type of jobs I think you're talking about (customer brings you parts that need to be welded together), I just figure out how many hours I think it will take me to do the job, and then apply that to my typical hourly rate, while also putting in a bit of slack to cover myself (i.e., if I think...

Re: Help with bead consistency

Your welds are noticeably cold, yet you are also cooking the part. This means that your amps are too low, and you travel speed is too slow. Those two problems feed each other. You are traveling too slowly because of the low amperage. Try upping your amperage to about 130A at the pedal. There are a b...

Re: Full penetration weld question

I TIG and MIG 11ga 2x2 tube structures almost each week. I always cut a bevel to about 1/16" land. No gap. Single pass almost always, unless I need to get up over a corner roll on some joints. The bevel is a good habit I think, but not completely necessary based on your application. Putting in ...

Re: Questions from a complete beginner - what kind of weldin

Can material A be welded to material B? If you look for answers on this, you will often only come across answers applicable to structural/code work. There's a very good reason for that, but it should also be taken for what it is. I would argue that what this guy is doing is closer to ornamental work...

Re: Lincoln Tig 200 Square Wave, anyone using?

Some run very limited postflow, that’s their choice. I'm usually pretty liberal with my argon, except for when I'm in production mode for parts that are getting paint or powder coat. That's when my post flow is set just long enough to keep the tungsten silver and no more. The Lincoln would drive me...

Re: Lincoln Tig 200 Square Wave, anyone using?

My LWS has one sitting right by the checkout counter so I look at it often and have always considered it. But for the price, the features and adjustability are a bit lacking, IMO. My conclusion has been that there are simply better options around that price point. But obviously I don't own one, so i...

I don't use pulse much at all, but recommend you start with 50% on time, 50% background, and 30-40 pulses/sec. Play around with the adjustments from there to see what responds best to the materials and machine you are using. You'll also need to up your amps a bit from the usual amp setting...probabl...

It's how we impress each other and establish dominance. Academics display their multitude of degrees. Master chefs hang t...
