Re: 3/8 V-Grooved backed plate 3G test 7018
Judging by the pictures. On the root the transition from left to right bevel is to slow so You get exessive buildup in the middle. Move faster across and hold a bit longer at the sides. The middle will then take care of itself. On subsequent layers the steps going up are to big and You don't pause l...

Re: 5g uphill root
Like Poland said, we need some more info. What size pipe, which type of electrode and what size? Long time ago in welding school I welded a lot with an old Invertec 300. I loved that machine, but it took some time getting used to. The arc on that thing was fierce and the heat always felt at least 20...

Re: What i am doing wrong
First of all, clean both pieces to shiny metal. I see lots of millscale on that 5mm plate. Then put some good tacks on so both parts have a good solid connection to the work clamp wherever you put it. A bad work clamp connection on one part will give a wandering arc resulting in blobs (pigeon poo) l...

Re: 7018 slag control
I use a file to get the slag of the end of the rod for restarts.
Using your gloved thumb rips the leather and before you know it you use your skin to get the slag of.
My gloves last a lot longer since i started using the file.

Re: Machine and electrode combinations
even though a machine is capable of the amperage and polarity of the rod being used. It's not just the amperage and polarity that are important. Welding voltage plays a very big part as well, and the curve between amperage and welding voltage defines the arc characteristics. Cellulose rods need dif...

Did they give a reason why they considered it unsafe?
The only reason I can think of is the balsa box that fits over your eyes. They might see that as a fire hazzard because its made of balsa wood.

Re: STICK STAINLESS TO MILD and the birth of rust offspring
GIDAY, The deck, infact all the steel is high tensile Would proper flash 316 stainless be less likely to upset the mild steel its welded to ? Now which is it? There is a difference between mild steel and high tensile steel. 2 different metals. Do you know what filler metal he used? Dissimilar metal...

The switch changes it to lift arc, never investigated it, although I thought you'd still get an arc. Hope it is okay, if not, I'd still contact the company. Never hurts to ask. When switching a stick/TIG inverter to TIG the OCV remains the same, but the welding voltage drops about 10V and i think t...

Re: CROOKED BEADS AND WHY CAN'T I SEE ANYTHING ?
There was a podcast recently where they talked about 7016 open root. It appears the rod was engineered for use in open root veritical up high strength pipe. you might be better off with a 7018 rod if you need lohi on regular applications. 7016 is used a lot in Europe and Oz and has been for a long ...

Re: CROOKED BEADS AND WHY CAN'T I SEE ANYTHING ?
I thought the pixies would come and make me weld in a straight line,.... Yep, those modern day pixies ain't what they used to be. I blame it all on cell phones and wifi, even the pixies are at it. The glasslike slag on 7016 is nothing strange. It just means that that is a double-coated rod. A mix b...

Re: Set up to weld big rusy chain links
That's a heavy piece of chain. I would get some more information on that piece of art first. What grade steel is the chain made of? How tall is it gonna be? How heavy is the 'object' that is suspended on the end and how far out from the base will that be? Will it be possible for people to stand/walk...

Re: Mystery Rods (Unmarked)
I had to google the Coor alloy rods and i found Cooralloy 3000 rods. not 300. Those are 312 rods as well and have a light grey flux judging from a picture on e-bay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dissimilar-Steel-Welding-Rods-3-32-9-75-lbs-Coor-Alloy-3000-120-ksi-/182928955876 Can't see no markings on the...

Re: Mystery Rods (Unmarked)
If the mystery rods have a bright white coating they could be aluminium rods. Knock some flux of the end of one and if the metal of the rod itself is very soft, not magnetic and looks like aluminium you have your answer. The Eutectrode 680 are 312 hi-nickel(10%) rods. Great for welding dissimilar me...

Re: Stick Flare Bevel Weld
I don't think its arc blow. Arc blow rears its head at the end of burning a rod at high amperage. The magnetic field has time to grow and the rod stub gets to hot so the arc starts to wander. I've never had magnetic arc blow with 1/16, 5/64 and 3/32 rods. With 1/8 rods and up arc blow can be a probl...

Re: Overhead butt on beam.
Ok, I'm faced with a 250mm long overhead butt weld on a T beam lintel with a 10mm flange thickness. The web has already been welded. I know the routine but the unknown quantity is that brickwork has already been built on top. Not my doing. So, 85 amps for the root, 105 for the hot pass and 95 to 10...

Re: vertical 7018 stringers
Why run vertical down if you can run vertical up? My thoughts exactly. You can use it in pinch when the rods you have are to big for the material thickness your welding because you put less heat in the material welding downhill but 7018 is not really the rod for that. It takes a lot of practice to ...

Re: vertical 7018 stringers
Vertical up with 3/32 7018 on 1/8” thick material is a challenge, especially if your inexperienced. Vertical up separates the men from the boys when stick welding with 7018. If all I had for this job was 3/32 7018, I would run one pass vertical down. Then go vertical up the second pass. There’s not...

Re: vertical 7018 stringers
Vertical up puts more heat in the material. Heat rises and heats up the material above a lot quicker than when welding flat. Welding the small gap at the rounded edge of the tubing makes it even more difficult. I use 2mm (5/64) 7018 at 65-70 amps DCEP on 3mm tubing and if there is a small gap I use ...

Re: Porosity in Square Tube Welds w/ 7018
7018 is prone to porosity at the start. Start a bit further in the joint and longarc a little bit back to the beginning to heat up the electrode and base material. Then keep a short arc en weld over the start to burn out the start porosity.

Re: 7018 Basic Weld Test Vertical Constant Failure Root Pass
How do you do the restarts? 7018 is prone to porosity at the start. You should restart about 1"above where you stopped, longarc it a bit back to your stop to heat up and tie in and weld over the start to burn the start porosity out. But if the fill and cap are allways good your restarts shouldn...
