4130 to Mild Steel.

I'm planning on welding in a small patch panel on the roof of my old car. I went down to the metal supplier today, and I asked for 1018 cold rolled. I took the drop piece they sold me which has some light surface rust on it home, (holy hell steel has gone up since I last bought some, $20 bucks for a...

The stand it self is trivial. The main thing to be concerned with is clamping on the bike without doing damage to the paint etc.

What is your budget?

Fronius has some pretty nifty stick machines that don't even need leads.

Don't all 6013s run downhill? 1 = all position? I haven't touched 6013 since welding school. No offense. It is really interesting hearing about what you have available. I'm surprised that in Japan with all the seismic activity like here on the west coast of the USA that you can even run anything tha...

Re: Welding boots recommendations wanted

If you are doing bench work and not on the knees often, moc toes are good enough. I'd always wear boots when welding just due to accidental drops of material onto the feet. Even tigging you never know. If you are on your knees a lot, getting something like a round toe or tough toe is going to last l...

Re: Vintage Cutting and Welding set

My understanding is new torches are much safer than vintage.

We've solved a lot of the hazards like adding built in flashback arresters and check valves in to the torch.

If it were me I'd trash that unit and get a journeymen kit from Victor or Smith.

Cheers.

Re: Can I start with TIG?

I know a lot of people who went straight with tig and are perfectly capable. I'd say go for it. If its too hard, then learn stick and then go back to tig. Keep working at it and you'll be proficient over time.

Re: Smoke extraction for TIG welding?

Osha typically recommends fume extraction at the source and respiratory protection when that isn’t possible. I can’t speak for everyone but I don’t have fume extraction, but even if I did I would still use my respirator. So to answer: you will be better off with your papr unit than without. I wouldn...

Interesting. I can't say I've seen door bars like that before, are those safe? I imagine you are trusting a lot on the hinge components? I'm not in the off-road world so pardon my ignorance.

‘Metals and how to weld them’ is a good book covering a lot of info in various materials. Nothing beets hands on experience though.

Re: 3/8 plate to 3/16 channel, low carbon steel

I would have no issue with small (1/4 or 3/8 inch for example) tacks on my own table. In the nicest way I can say it, the great thing about building your own stuff is you get to do it how you want, and nobody can say you did it wrong. If you want to weld it go for it, if you want to bolt it, do it. ...

I'd fasten it down as others mentioned. Otherwise, I'd just tac it down myself. 3/8 plate isn't going anywhere.

Re: Is “KD D500N” rebar weldable?

I'd ask what you're doing with it. If its critical don't even bother trying would be my stance. If you're putting it in concrete twist it.

If its art, burn it.

Re: Looking for advice, 2 80cf tanks or 1 125cf tank

I would ask the supplier you plan to swap with what they charge to swap each size. A lot of places charge approx the same amount for an 80 vs 125, so you'd be paying more up front and down the road with 80cfg tanks. If its less than I'd probably go with the 80 cfg tanks. You'd be supporting the supp...

Re: Advice on a Welding Helmet

I've got a Miller Digital Elite (Miller equivalent to the Lincoln). It fits a 7500M with 2097 just fine. I also like to have a lincoln leather bib attached to the hood. That basically ensures that even if the respirator is touching (which is isn't) I won't get arc light coming from underneath.

I'd love to hear a definition of full penetration on tubing. Are we walking about penetrating through the backside of both tubes, or just the coped tube?

I was just going to mention the same thing. I a lot of folks doing 1.75 and 2inch .125 wall do a root and cap pass. First pass is to get good root penetration, second pass it for reinforcement and aesthetic. Also cut and etch on your practice pieces could be a great learning experience or maybe a go...
