Re: Welding hood fittinng

Thanks for the input. I also found one that goes in the back. I think between the two of them, I can get the job done..

Again, Thanks for your input

Welding hood fittinng

I have a question for you guys. I have a relatively small head (6-7/8). I have several old welding hoods that work for me but my two new ones are to big for me. I have rapped rags around the head band but that is kind of hokey and moderately functional. Someone out there must be having the same prob...

Re: Converting oxygen regulator for tig use

I concur with Nobbybrian's comment concerning the use of a cheap single stage regulator. Switching to a cheap single stage oxygen regulator may not be an improvement at all if the regulator does not work properly. A two stage regulator is by far the best way to go. I have a oxygen regulator that is ...

Re: Converting oxygen regulator for tig use

There really is no difference between a Oxygen regulator and an Argon regulator except for the bottle fitting. That being said, I would have not problem with going from Oxygen to Argon but, NOT THE OTHER WAY!! Oxygen regulators are put through a special cleaning process to INSURE that there is NO hy...

Re: Van Bed Frame

I would be nervous as heck with the top frame. It looks like you only have one (1) supporting hoop. I would not think that would work. Better go with two (2) supporting hoops. I recently made a rack for the top of my dune buggy. I also pondered over the use of steel versus aluminum. When I did the d...

Re: New member from Prescott Valley, AZ

Dennis: Glad to meet you and again welcome to the forum. First, I must say that I am also a newby to the art of TIG welding. Don't get frustrated it will come with practice but it will take practice. First, I do a fair amount of thin metal welding. I have found that the setup of the torch is importa...

Re: Cheater lenses

No the feeling well. I am north of 65. I need tri-focals to see what I am doing and also have to wear safety glasses for work. I had a pair of work glasses made by my eye doctor. The work glasses are only bi-focals and only have the short and mid range lens in them. The idea is that while working, I...

Re: Welding new metal with 46 year old car frame

Thanks for the tip.

I'll have to get ma a spool of Sil/Bronze. There are a lot of times when Brazing would be a good option.

Re: Welding new metal with 46 year old car frame

I have never heard of Sil/Bronze wire. I do on occasion do quite a bit of real thin steel. When I have to do this I generally use my TIG machine for better heat control. What kind of gas would you use with Sil/Bronze wire?? Would that be kind of like brazing with o/a?? Relatively new, I have been we...

Re: Welding new metal with 46 year old car frame

If you intend to do quite a bit of this and it looks like you have a serious project going on, a wire machine is the way to go period. Now, with that said, if your going to invest in a wire machine, seriously consider spending a little more and get a machine that can support the use of gas (argon, C...

Re: Machinable MIG Welds

Generally the part involved is relatively small but they could be part of a much larger item. I was thinking that the welded area was picking up the carbon from the gas(C25). I have not tried to anneal the part, nor a have I tried to preheating the part. Most of the material I have worked with was c...

Re: Use of Gas Lenses

Thanks for the input.

I just bought a stubby gas lenses, cup set for my torch. If nothing else, it will help me get the torch into tight places.

Thanks for your help.

Machinable MIG Welds

I have question for you guys. From time to time, I need to make repairs to some item where I would need to re-drill or machine the part after welding. I have notice that welds made using the MIG process are very hard. You can grind them but re-drilling or re-machining the part is pretty much impossi...

Re: Use of Gas Lenses

Thanks for the input. In this case I was working with 1/16" wall Aluminum tubing so the 1/16" tungsten was a good choice. As for the short arc, I have found that with alum, the shorter the arc the better. I may try a larger clear cup (so I can see through it) and an gas dam behind the weld...

Re: Use of Gas Lenses

Thanks for the acceptance and the replies. I am not a pro by any means and for the most part do not get paid for my work. I due work a lot with tubing though and some of the joints are hard if not impossible for me to get welded. I can do better with MIG because you can let the wire go out a ways an...

Use of Gas Lenses

First, I would like to say thanks for the excellent videos posted on this web site. They are the best I have seen. You can actually see the puddle not just a bright over exposed light which is not really helpful. In viewing a number of the videos on this site, I noticed that in a large number of the...
