Re: Miller classic auto darkening, can't see anything

Yes I'm using the same helmet. It's as if the plasma doesn't light up the surroundings as much as in stick welding.

Miller classic auto darkening, can't see anything

I have a miller classic auto darkening helmet. Even though I have reduced the shading A LOT, I still can't clearly see when I weld. And I don't want to further reduce the shading adjustment. My eyesight isn't really the issue because when I weld stick, this issue doesn't happen. Is it safe to reduce...

Re: Dull looking welds

Thanks for the helpful replies guys! Very much appreciated. Being a beginner, it sometimes happens that I make multiple mistakes, which compound each other and one mistake causes the next step to fail. But i'll keep at it. Luckily I have lots of scrap steel lying around :) Here is another test I wil...

Re: Dull looking welds

I think part of the reason was that I never let the work cool. I just sanded it and continued welding on another untouched spot. I will cut pieces from another tube and practice on new pieces everytime. Hopefully that will make a difference.

Re: Dull looking welds

Thanks for the response, that makes sense ... I have some experience OA gas welding steel and this kinda felt like I was doing OA welding :) How close do I need to be with the tungten tip? I really needed to be very close. The tip was about 1 mm away from the surface and the arc umbrella was very sm...

Re: Dull looking welds

I cleaned the work with paint thinner beforehand and used grinder type sanding disk on the area to be welded.

I suspected that the gas isn't sufficient and cranked up the gas flow to 12l/min, but still, exact same result.

Dull looking welds

Hi, I did some tig welding practice today on steel. The welds always look dull and as if they are covered with some dark gray, matt finish. I used a square tube with 4mm wall thickness. A welding calculator told me to use between 120 - 150 Amps, so I set the machine to 150 A so that when the pedal h...

Re: New member

Ok the big thread nozzles were "gas lens" type nozzles. As I didn't get a gas lens, I wasn't able to use them. But today I got a box of #7 regular nozzles and set out to do my first weld. The power cord for the water cooler was not delivered (they forgot to include it grrr), so I set the a...

Re: New member

Welcome aboard mate! What machine did you get? Thank you! I got a dynasty 280dx with water cooler. I have also gotten the wired foot pedal and the classic series mask. For the torch, I went with a local generic brand instead of a miller torch, because the miller torch didn't have the on/off switch ...

Re: New member

Welcome. Do yourself a favor and grab this: https://weldmongerstore.com/products/tig-hardware-bundle Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm in Turkey, can only buy local cause of customs restrictions. I looked for stores that were open today and found one that carried welding supplies. I did get a coll...

Hi, I'm an electronics engineer and doing firmware development for living. Metalworking has been my hobby for quite a few years now. Yesterday, my new miller TIG welder has just been delivered to my home shop today. I rushed out to get the necessary supplies for it so that I can experiment with it o...
