Re: Plasma cut /gouge and cast iron

Thank you Otto.

Sorry for my limited English. I ask if it may be an option to use a cheap plasma cutter to open cracks in iron.

If it burn the iron , obviously it is not.

Thanks

Re: Personal attacks- enough, already

I'm sorry about what I have done. I will turn it down many (many, many, many)notches. Again I'm sorry and will focus more on welding Breathe, young man. You're entitled to defend yourself. I just mopped up the puke I found in one of the topics being referenced. I like a ball-bust or a joke as much ...

Plasma cut /gouge and cast iron

Hello, I did read that plasma cutting do deform the less the pieces if compared with other crude methods. I wonder if on cast iron it will generate less white hardened iron than cutting disk ? I am wondering if the process, by immediate ejection of the melted metal, do not allow a less deep heat pen...

Re: electrode move in 8 horizontal for 3F position ?

I tried 8 flat 3F , not rzally possible because of the shortening of the electrode, the left-right displacement is always changing,, to complicated ;)

Re: electrode move in 8 horizontal for 3F position ?

Hello and thank you Dave, I think you are right, I better go back to basics , I did concentrate on vertical up because I had to make such a weld but in iron, so I left aside 2F for instance, and realized I had trouble with that if I want to do stringers only (with small circles O am more consistent,...

electrode move in 8 horizontal for 3F position ?

I am gonna try that for the vertical up progression in triangle, that mean the stinger go left for welding right side, and reverse. is it something possible ? (mostly to avoid undercut by allowing less inclination between rod and walls) ? second, undercut seem to be a roll of the weld , is it ? (lac...

Re: stick welding cast iron

One of the most important things to consider when welding cast iron is weld prep. How you prepare the surface to be welded will have a great impact on weldability. Rule #1: Never touch cast iron with an abrasive . Most people break this rule, using a grinder to cut a nice groove in a cracked piece ...

Re: stick welding cast iron

For the OP, the two commonly available rods near me are nickel 99 and nickel 55, the Ferroweld rods listed below I have not seen in my local store[/i] Dave chances are that your nickel 55 are bimetal NiFe. Older welders did talk of iron electrodes but this did not work well. Some iron will crack ve...

Re: stick welding cast iron

If you have a thick piece of c/i you can "butter" the edges of the weld zone with the nickel rods. This means pad welding over the top and then welding up with another, cheaper rod, like 7018. Hello that is a good short resume . I did read preferably NiFe rods , may be for thermal expansi...

Re: Why so much doc say DCEP is more penetrant?

Yes , Dave, as a "virtual welder" ,without instructor, I overthink before going real ;) that helps in the end to analyse my mistakes better, I think the shape of the heat is supposedly different. More sharp in straight polarity. It may be better then for thinner metal as it is more difficu...

I have done many cast iron cracked jobs. I always drill a hole at each end of crack to prevent the crack from going any farther. I almost always braze them. For cracks in cylinder heads I plug weld them. Never had a come back in 45 years. Fly :geek: Hello do you left open the holes when possible ? ...

Re: Why so much doc say DCEP is more penetrant?

Hello back to topic, I was lucky today to have a feel of the difference depending of polarity on certain metals or may be only on thin or moderately thin, DCEN will penetrate better because of the sharper shape of the arc plus fused metal the documents provided by the electrodes makers are intended ...

Re: Weaving vs stringer and tips for a 3G test

Maybe I don't touch when the rod angle is 90, I don't pay much attention to it. I'm focused on keeping the arc close while watching the puddle and trying to keep an eye on the edges. Anyway, touching/dragging is something when there is no weld , after that the weld you touch tend to melt soon I und...

What your seeing is probably the slag as it mover across the puddle and starts to form. There's a little bit of an art to seeing the slag and yet seeing what the puddle looks like underneath that. I get it ! "A bit of an art ;)" I trust you .. And I was not expecting you could go 90 and e...

Thanks Josh those are great details, they help a lot ;) I was not expecting you could go 90 and even more to push while keeping the weld free of slag . You still touch the base l'étal when pushing ? (At 90 I guess no) I will look at the puddle plus the gas shield together I think . You see the gas s...

Re: Weaving vs stringer and tips for a 3G test

It's an odd picture angle. Those were welded with 3/32 7018 and the bead is about 1/4 wide. I was not far it is almost 3 times no ? Did you do that by dragging very slowly and straight around, or with a very small weaving ? That is about how much Amp ? For the short arc I am at it from the start, I...

Resistance is your air gap. Or arc length. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroplating Electron flow plays a part in deposition rates. Is 'R' something you have in mind when welding, for instance modulating your arc lenght you know that you will have a certain effect in metallurgy ? I do not fig...

Thanks, Farmwelding, you have been lucky I suppose it is normal sometime ;) best of luck for the next year .! The stringer : no manipulation or very little there ? Is the upper weld 3 times the diameter of the rod. No way to test those types with penetrating dye I suppose. ? What 'tricks' are possib...

Re: Weaving vs stringer and tips for a 3G test

Its person to person. Once you have a good bit of time on the metal, get comfortable with a good setting and get used to the actual motion- they're pretty much all the same. You can't get complacent (not that you would) and assume that the weld will make itself, but it does get easier. Just don't g...

Re: Weaving vs stringer and tips for a 3G test

A "stringer" lets you oscillate the thickness of the rod. For a 1/8" rod you can "weave" 1/8" and still call it a stringer. Steve Can you please tell me what mean the guy in that 7018 text from Lincoln where he state : "When welding the second pass, use a weaving ...

After much reading and exchanges , I got that stick welding DCEN allow a quieter and more manageable arc so it is choosed by some for the first root pass (up to some thickness of metal certainly) Also with thin gauges DCEN is used up to ga13 for instance, then with thicker steel it does not allow go...

I'm sure there are some numbers to it for travel speed through a weld with a given electrode, at X current, etc. but what it usually comes down to is not going too fast or too slow, but "just right". That's where the art of welding occurs. The science of it (numbers, etc.) is important to...

Its per code you need to keep them in an oven, structural code I believe. Since you are not doing structural code type work, you don't have to worry about it. That's where it comes from. Any effort you make to keep them dry and such is not going to hurt them, it will only make it better. I have hea...

I agree with the original post-er i would like to see BAD WELDS. When we "rookie", "hobby", non-professional welders get under the hood we don't always see what we see in videos of proper technique and results. By seeing the wrong way and what caused the wrong thing we can learn...
