High tech machines

I was just wondering if there are any specialized, high tech machines/power supplies used by TIG welders for doing critical work for aerospace, nuclear etc. or do they all use what we use such as Miller, Lincoln etc.

Looking for cable cover/protector

I recently bought a Miller 252 package which came with their 30A spool gun. All the cables/hose look on the spool gun durable but I would like to cover them with something light but protective. I have seen the zippered and velcro types but I'm looking for what I used years ago for TIG torch cables. ...

Re: Angle grinder

It's Milwaukee for me all the way. I have a 4-1/2" in the shop for repair but that was because I literally worked it to death. I gave it no quarter, it came up smokin'. Now I have to pay for my misdeeds.

OT: Any guitar players or musicians here?

I have always found that some creative people in the metal working trades also enjoy music. Some just listen and some actually play and instrument. Myself? I play guitar, mostly my Martin 00016 flattop but I can also lay it down with my Fender custom shop Tele. I also play some pedal steel. Anybody ...

Re: Finished my vise resto

It will be going on the new welding table I'm building. It will actually be sitting off to one end of it on a separate plate attached on the bottom surface of the table. The frame will get painted tomorrow and the I'll order the 72" x 40" x 1-1/4" top and get it Blanchard ground. Then...

Finished my vise resto

Had it sandblasted and zinc yellowed the metal parts as well as remade some of them adding my own touches. This vise stands 13.5" tall and weighs 120#.

Thats awesome. Your kid will never forget the shop days with Dad, I know I still remember them with mine. They grow up so fast and then become HUGE pains in the ass ...like mine. Enjoy then when they are little  That's right. I regret not getting my kids involved in the shop. I had a large (70...

Let's see your TIG rod storage setup pics

Ok, I have said it on the other part of this site that I'm going to be buying a TIG machine. So, in the meantime I'd like to see how you folks store your TIG rod for easy accessibility. I need to start formulating some ideas and I'm almost out of projects. :D Got some pics?

Thanks

Re: Any ESAB TIG users?

Yeah... Dynasty's are pretty great. 210, 280, 350. Used them all-loved them all. Miller tigs are my favorite. If you get a 280 though-you better get a tig runner to get water cooled. I run 180 amps with an air cooled torch and after twenty minutes it is unbearable. If I do get the 280 (most likely ...

Any ESAB TIG users?

I have my eye on a Miller Dynasty 280 but I got looking at the ESAB 281i AC/DC machine. Was looking at the ESAB 0558101708 which is the complete package but I can't find what is exactly included with it. One of the drawbacks is that it is not available in a 240V 3Ph unit only 460 in 3ph.. Anybody ha...

Re: Which chopsaw or Bandsaw would you get?

For a chop saw I have a 10" cold saw. Once you use one of these you will want to see how far you can throw your abrasive saw. They are more expensive but oh what a difference.

For big cut off work I have a DoAll 916 horizontal bandsaw. For my vertical I have a DoAll 1612. Both are nice saws.

Re: Welding resume

When you go to the interview dress as if you could go to work right then and there. The clothes should be clean of course but even wear your work shoes/boots. Also, have your gear in your truck (hood, gloves etc.) so if they ask you to burn some wire/rod/stick etc.

Is it true that you have more leeway on an inverter as far as tungsten selection goes?

BTW, what are the real advantages of an inverter over a tranny machine besides power savings?
