Re: 220 volts from two 110 volt extension cords ?
I'm a pretty "redneck" kind of guy when it comes to getting a solution to a problem, and I know how to do just that, but like the others, nope. Not at my house or anyone else's. Best to run a sub - panel and wire it correctly.

Re: Prevent Aluminium monkey bars from twisting.
I've had serious problems welding AL plate (like it looks more like a bowl than a plate when I finish), but I can weld 4x4 1/8th inch square tube on a mitered 90 degree corner top and bottom, inside and outside corners with zero distortion.

...and that's why I like Sirius/XM and the public radio. Unlike the classic rock station, or the hick-hop station, I will hear at least two songs I've never heard before every damn day. I don't understand guys who listen to the classic rock station every day. It's the same handful of songs I've alr...

Re: Tornado proof Adirondack chairs
1/2" plate steel? Who was thinking what? The Ipe alone is heavy enough to make transport difficult... I hope someone treated the metal because it will rust and badly discolor the Ipe from below. They are going to be feature pieces in a public space, and have been to the finish department. They...

Re: Tornado proof Adirondack chairs
Sounds like lawn chairs they could use in Chicago. Or then again, worth too much in scrap. Do they have d-rings with massive chains holding them to a concrete pillar as well  No d-rings, but they do have a 1 1/2" hole to run the chain through. I think if someone wants to steal them that t...

Tornado proof Adirondack chairs
20170405_165914.jpg At work we built some lawn chairs for a client. To say that they are sturdy would be an understatement, as they would serve as great cover during an "active shooter" situation and will in all likelihood stay put during an F tornado. The body is made from half inch stee...

Re: Everything about aluminum
So I've been doing a lot of aluminum tig welding in the last week. Been using 6061 1/8" for my plate. We have only 3/32" 4043 at school so my first question is is this okay or should we have other filler? When I run a t-joint I am having issues getting plate A and plate B to melt at the s...

Re: Lets talk china Tigs?
I think it would be theoretically possible to do so, maybe as a pet project. It may mean starting with a new case (custom user designed, of course) so you could mount things where they made the most sense, add additional cooling fans or upgrade wiring, etc. If I had the time and a machine to start w...

I can tell you That Chattahoochee Tech is a "college" that has a welding program, but some guys I work with have said that they require core classes (academic) before or along with the welding part. I know a few that have gone to Georgia Trade School and they are all about welding and happ...

just a thought but when i was young (a long time ago) i would save up the amount for something, then buy it on credit and pay it off. that way if i got in a jam i would have the cash to pay for it. funny though i always seemed to be able to pay it off. this leaves you money for a larger purchase la...

Re: TIG pedal build
Thanks, though I am not in the trade, just a hobbyist who started in 2015 with an old used stick welder. Hobbyist or not, it takes a bit of knowledge about a lot of things (metallurgy, thermal dynamics, electricity in general) to be a fairly competent welder. You may have picked it up as a hobby, b...

Re: Pluse Setting
Look at it this way If you set your machine on 100amps and use half of the pedal you would be welding at 50 amps. (assuming you have pressed the pedal exactly half way) Now lets set up the pulser, on a Miller it's set as a percentage, you set peak time to 50%---this is the TIME you will spend at pe...

Re: New to Tig welding, what do i need to get started
Well that is a pretty good start! Eventually you'll need more filler, especially when you start aluminum. Other than that you've got everything to start. No need for a special torch set up just yet. Make it work with what comes for know. +1 There is a guy at work that for the most part uses the sam...
