The easy solution to saving your back is to have your splitter pivot to the upright position so you don't need to lift the logs.
I'm 71 and I split my own wood by myself each year with mine.

Re: Best position for this type of weld
Anyway, I did finish the airbox and fit it to my wagon - Nissan Patrol now with 4.2 turbo diesel I transplanted last year.
Most of the worst welds are in the bottom half so can't be seen as much.
This is the finished item fitted..

Re: Best position for this type of weld
Thanks for the replies guys. I did do mine with the pipe facing me but wondered if it was usual/better to point it up and do it like T joint/filet. I'm sure that for those experienced enough to do any out of position welding, they would do an equally good job either way. This might make you laugh bu...

This is my own effort. I'm a bit disappointed I wasn't able to do better because I've done some much better welds on flat plate while practicing.

Best position for this type of weld
This is a custom 4" in/out airbox for a turbo diesel similar to what I own. I'd like to know how you good welders would do the weld on the outlet pipe. This is not my welding, I'm only a beginner. Would you weld it with the pipe pointing upwards or is it better to have the pipe facing towards y...

That explains why they work the same after you grind the thickness back.

Tungsten questions
I tried to research this online but found nothing.
What causes the tungsten to swell when you dip it in the puddle?
Does that swollen section need to be cut off before resharpening? I have tried both cutting it off and grinding it back down to its normal size and both worked the same afterwards.

Re: Hook in end of filler rod
Until I finally bought my own gas bottles, I was getting gas from a company here called Air Liquide and their bottles just had a red lever to open/close which I thought was a really good idea because you could see at a glance if the bottle was open or closed. The last argon refill I got has such a h...

Re: Hook in end of filler rod
That's the problem, it's not seen. Sent using Tapatalk I don't follow.. I'm guessing it's probably more a habit in shops where the user isn't paying for the filler rods because it would add to the waste. It wouldn't be done by those who use a holder at the end to get the most from the rod. I've bee...

Re: Hook in end of filler rod
Of course. Working alone in my shed, it wouldn't have occurred to me that I might poke someone. I don't quite see the risk to myself though with the helmet on.weldin mike 27 wrote:So you don't poke yourself or others in the eye. First and foremost.

Hook in end of filler rod
Why do some people do this?
I've tried to research it but no results. The only reasons I could think of were 1) to hang it on the edge of the table or 2) make it easier to pick up if you drop it on the floor

Re: Cleaning alu residue from rod feeding glove
Well.... Lets consider it for a second. By you running your rod through your hands does not break the oxide layer on the rod, nor are you deoxidizing it at any point unless your gloves are sandpaper. (not trying to give you a hard time or anything, just trying to teach you a lil' somethin'.) The on...

Re: Cleaning alu residue from rod feeding glove
It's not the look I was concerned about. Couldn't care less about the colour. It was more about how there's so much being said about being super clean with aluminium. What's the point in wiping down the rod with acetone, etc then running that rod through an oxide covered glove? Remember you're talki...

Cleaning alu residue from rod feeding glove
I've been following the advice on feeding rod while watching TV, etc and have now clocked up quite a few hours. The result is that the 3 fingers of the glove are now a shiny dark grey from polishing the rod. How do you folks usually clean this off without damaging a not cheap glove? I have some good...

Re: Newbie question about arc start
Also check your work clamp for a good connection or your welding table for same. If my table gets a bit rusty mine will do that sometimes but it's rare because I try to keep it cleaned up. I got into the habit of using a heavy 3rd hand I made with a MIG copper tip fitted to it that I place on the w...

Re: Newbie question about arc start
Thanks for the replies. I've read suggestions that later, even chinese, inverter AC/DC machines don't use gapped points anymore but I'll need to confirm that. mine's 2016 model has point gaps. How hard is it to look? Struggle on Lucky you! I really don't see the point in opening a new machine that ...

Re: Newbie question about arc start
I'm happy to keep doing it, might even do it every time, now that I'm sure it's not an impending fault in the machine. I've trained myself to lightly touch the tungsten to the work to make sure I didn't forget to tighten the collet. That also gives me added confidence that I know how far I am from ...

Re: Any Reason to Have Both MIG and TIG?
I asked myself the same question when I bought my TIG but then convinced myself that the TIG simply couldn't effectively replace the MIG completely. Add to that the fact that 2nd hand 10 year old MIG machines don't sell so well around here because nobody will buy without seeing it working so the Eba...

Thanks for the replies. I've read suggestions that later, even chinese, inverter AC/DC machines don't use gapped points anymore but I'll need to confirm that. Newbie question about arc start
I have a cheap $798 (AUD) AC/DC 200 amp machine but it does have HF start. I often have an issue where the arc will not start unless i first (before hitting the pedal) lightly rub the tungsten tip on the alu surface. I don't mean scratch it, just lightly touch the surface as if it just needs to remo...

Welcome from another keen TIG newbie but from a different generation. I'm doing the same excercise on a 3mm plate but your runs are a bit more consistent than mine. My 71 year old hands will probably take a little longer to get it right but I'm confident I'll get there. I lost time trying to start o...

Re: A hood that doesn't flash when the forklift drives by???
I'm new to TIG and I've had an Optrel Satelite for about 10 years which has been faultless with the MIG welding.
I have an issue with flashes on low amps. The solution I found was to turn on pulse so the max amps are higher.
