Re: Welding table Flatness

I suggest using a grinding cup to remove spatter and tack welds. It won't penetrate the surface the a flapper or a grinding disk will. If you are welding something precise, then you may have to replace the table. If you are welding art and crafts type stuff, then you are likely fine. How out of flat...

Re: Ac/dc tig machine

I have the Everlast 256SI. It runs $2,500 (incl the cooler). It's a multi-process machine that does stick and plasma, which is an unusual combination. Some people are opposed to multiprocess machines. I've ran the tig and plasma so far and both operated great. Having said that, I am simply a hobby w...

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I'm fascinated by submarines. Have you read the book "Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage"? It's pretty good.

Re: Stressed welds

If I am looking at the pictures correctly, the weld failed at the leg, not through the throat. I almost wonder if it was brazed instead of welded. Failure between base metal and the leg of a weld is very unusual. and even if it did occur at the weld, it wouldn't be a clean break. it wasn't brazed. ...

Re: Dry Saw Blade Recommendations?

To answer your question, no they likely did not cheap out on the blade. You simply cannot cut 4" square tubing on a 14" dry cut circular saw, unless said tubing is 1/16-1/8"wall thickness. Most non-commercial saws are rated for maximum combined thickness of 1/4" (6mm). He said h...

Re: 308LSI on 316 Base Metal

I'm using a dial gauge and it's the same gauge that I use for CO2 and C25 (less the adapter). And yes, I can hear gas pouring out of it. I ran 3 tig passes on the plate with 308 filler rod (same spec as the mig wire). The first was low amp 90 with a 1/16 electrode and a No. 8 cup and it was cold. Th...

Re: Welding Flatware

I believe the only places he is grinding is where he needs to shape something. For example, the beak is made from the shafts of two spoons coming together. Grinding is needed to form it into a beak. I'll have to try the tinfoil dam trick. It's pretty junky steel. Here is a link of the guy from the UK...

Welding Flatware

I've been trying to weld flatware to make little animals and it's pretty tough. The best results for me so far has been tig brazing and even those results weren't all that great, due to my limited, hobbyist abilities (see pictures of the crab - that's mine). I'd like to see someone with Jody's skill...

Re: 308LSI on 316 Base Metal

No, the gas was on. I tried it at 25. 30, and 40 cfh. Like I said, the gas might be bad. I have a Lincoln Powermig, which has voltage settings A thru G. The recommended settings are voltage E at 190 in/min which puts the volts on the high end. I dropped the voltage down to C and kept the wire feed a...

Re: Cart Toolbox

I ended up making a primitive cart to simply get the welder and water cooler off the ground. Afterwards I added storage racks for the filler rod and cable storage. I went with Jody's pvc tube design for the filler rods. Because I painted the original, primitive cart, I drilled and bolted (or tapped)...

Handgun Rack

I have all sorts of handguns and my gun safe doesn't provide much in the way of handgun storage and I didn't wan to buy the holders that attach to the inside of the door. This simply hangs off the upper shelf and there is a drop-down, magnetic bar that holds all the magazines. It's an easy enough pr...

308LSI on 316 Base Metal

Has anyone here ever tried 308LSI on 316 base metal? I believe 316 wire is supposed to be used with 316 base metal, but I figured it should still work for non-structural purposes. However, there was terrible spatter, soot, and cracking in the welds. (I also manage to melt two tips, so I need to back...

O/H Tool Storage & Table Extension

I have a tiny garage and 4'x6' table with a 3' extension. Grinders, drills, shields, etc all pile up in a hurry and it's a mess. I decided to make an overhead storage rack, kinda like some kitchens have to hang post and pans. I've since added another piece across the front side so I have a total of ...

Silverware Welding

I found this post in the forums from a few years ago regarding welding of silverware. I am working on projects do that same thing and I'm wondering if fusing is not the proper way to do it. It seems to me that adding filler rod may only help make the joints look "globby". This guy uses a w...

Re: Cart Toolbox

Everlast lists it at 100 lbs and UPS had it at 94 lbs. That would include all the leads, power cord, etc. The welder arrived yesterday and it was pretty heavy. UPS has the cooler at 33 lbs and 2 gallons of water/coolant is around 8 lbs. Your idea is a good one, but I think what I might do instead is...

Re: Cart Toolbox

Thanks all. (I just noticed that I said "narrow set of drawings" in my original post - ). I did think about modifying a cheapo cart, but I'm afraid that I'll end up with a modified cheapo cart. The welder is 100 lbs and the cooler will be about 40 lbs when full. Pretty stout when co...

Cart Toolbox

I purchased an Everlast 256SI, which comes with a water cooler. I want to build a welding cart with a narrow set of drawings (similar to the attached picture). Anyone know where I can get a set of narrow drawers? I don't want to make my own. Thanks.
