For the sake of economy in practice, what would be a good rule of thumb for minimum size for plate and pipe coupons? Could I have 1 in wide slivers to weld, or cut and re-weld a section of pipe multiple times? Would the HAZ affect how the next joint would weld?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Boots
Does anybody have recommendations for a great pair of boots for in the shop?
I need to get a new pair of safety toe boots but don’t need insulated or waterproof. The trend seems to be toward sneakers but those don’t seem very flame resistant.
Thanks for the recommendation s in advance

Re: Aluminum questions
Thanks for all the help.
I usually regind the tip and scotchbrite the discolored portion. The reason I asked is because am having a lot of arc wander and I wanted to make sure it wasn’t a torch hygiene issue.
It’s most likely a technique problem and I need to get more hours on Aluminum.

Re: Aluminum questions
Of course, for actual welding jobs, you will want to either use the same alloy, or verify that the alloys are compatible for welding and service.

For Tungsten sharpening: I am breaking off the contaminated tip and regrinding. Should I also be cleaning/breaking-off/regrinding the oxidized area up the tungsten? For material: are there any consideration that need addressed when welding together different aluminums, I.e. 5052 to 6061? I am mostly...

Concerns to work from home
I am finally to the point where I am looking at buying a home and as a hobbyist I am dreaming about setting up a home shop. I have a long list of gear that I would like to outfit the shop with because I like to make all kinds of things. My thoughts are that if I could sell some of those things I cou...

Re: Looking for some advice
For practice metals, I buy “proto-boxes” from onlinemetals.com. They are basically drops from various shapes and materials at a reasonable price(compared to local availability). You kinda just get what they have at the time but welding the different shape combinations has been good practice for me a...

An opportunity popped up at work. A large aluminum job came in and the company is looking for other people to assist the main welder in its completion. Here's the course catalog from your local community college, the welding courses start on page 221 and they look extensive. Tuition is $110/hr, so it will be hard to find better/cheaper opportunities. You mention "...how to select materials, designing joints, layout of projects, etc." All...

Preparing small bits of scrap for welding
I have collected a bin of scrap steel to use for practicing. Unfortunately I keep the bin in the garage and even the cold rolled bits have surface rust and there is still mill scale on other pieces. What are some good ways to prepare the surface for welding? Most pieces a kind of small to hit with a...

I have seen a couple threads where there is reference to running solid wire with 100% CO2. What are the pros and cons of this practice? Is there any special considerations for running straight CO2?

Re: 6010 on inverter
Thank you all for the replies. I am a self-learning hobbyist so please excuse my lack of knowledge.
I was wondering what 6010s required differently in electric output and what causes it(composition?).
I have no idea what the correct terms are so thank you for your help.

Re: Tig Brazing practice
Things are getting a little better but I am still melting base metal into my braze. I switched to using the torch switch but even at 40 amps the 1/8th inch steel is melting. These were just scrap pieces. I plan to just keep practicing.
As always any help is appreciated.

Thank you.
Ok, I am changing the plan, not the goal. I will have to engrave a steel tag.
My first try with silicon bronze did not go well. I tried a bead on plate and it looked all granular and didn't wet out.
Any help is appreciated.
