Re: Magnesium saw repair

Most of my career I've TIG welded, but never came across magnesium, what was the cost for how much? Local shop has AZ101 for $90/lb. I found smaller quantity of AZ61 on ebay, $35 for 14 rods, not sure what the weight is. I probably need 1 piece so I'll give the rest to the welding program at local ...

Re: Magnesium saw repair

Wow, the filler is crazy expensive. I can buy a used saw off ebay for less than the smallest amount of filler I can find. I'll just get a used saw in lousy condition and cannibalize it for the part.

Re: Magnesium saw repair

Thanks for article, I'll look at that. The manufacturer bragged about the saw guard and housing being magnesium because it's light weight. It's no longer made or I'd order a part. I have right and left hand versions of the same framing saw, so I'd like to keep it running if possible.

Magnesium saw repair

I dropped my circular saw and broke the blade guard, which is magnesium. I'm pretty good with steel and aluminum, but never welded magnesium. What filler would I use, any tips on settings? Hopefully I can use argon. I've done some brazing, would that be a better option? Here's some photos: https://p...

Re: Looking for some advice

Also, where is a good place to get metal to practice on? I took a few welding classes at the local community college after I retired. They get so much extra scrap metal from local companies that they're happy to give it away rather than just send it to the scrapper. If you're near a community colle...

I had a helmet that had all 4 sensors along the bottom of the viewing window, so the sensors would often get blocked if the bottom of the helmet was below table top height, or behind a piece of whatever I was welding. I got a helmet that has sensors along the top and bottom of the viewing window, th...

Either way, does the box...HTP 221 have "kick and weld" or is it lift, or scratch.? I used a 221 for a few days in a class I took, I like it as well as anything else I've ever used. To answer your question it has HF start and other nifty features, such as independent current control on bo...

Re: Overall Appearance

I use wood strips to support things I don't want to scratch. It's a little harder with aluminum because heat spreads so far from the weld. Makes grounding more complicated, but keeps things looking nice.

Looks really nice, you must have done a good job cutting it to get a nice tight joint. When you first posted I looked up Frostbite Falls, I thought you were being a wise guy. I never knew it was a real place but was one of my favorite imaginary places as a kid.

Re: Lincoln 3350 4c vs. Miller Clear Light vs. Optrel

I've already had trouble with welding outside, undesired dimming from shop neighbor's remote arc flashes, and getting flashed while using relatively low amps with TIG. X-mode should address all of those things, correct? X mode solved my welding outdoor problem, but it didn't solve the problem weldi...

Re: Idealarc 250 electric plug 101 question

Not sure why there would be a neutral (white) lead. I can only speculate that there is something in the welder that requires 110v, so the neutral would allow that. For example, 110v cooling fans are much cheaper than 220v cooling fans. On modern electric ovens there is a neutral to provide 110v to ...

Re: Help, Running 220 to Garage From Sub-box Possible?

I don't think you can get romex for 100A run, or if you can it will be really expensive and might require you to buy a large roll. So you can either go with 80A and use romex, or run counduit for 100A. You probably need #3 wire so conduit would be 1", so you'll need an electrician who has tools...

I'd second the vote that smell is going to be tough to control. Solvents for cleaning are a separate problem, you might be able to use them out in the garage then carry the metal inside. If you weld something that had any oil on it, that really smells bad. If that room has a cold air return, I'd blo...

Sorry to hear you need surgery. I also have Dupuytren's contracture in two of my fingers but it is mild enough that at my age the doctor said I will likely never need surgery. It is hereditary so you can thank one of your ancestors. My grandma had it really bad, so I guess I got it from her. Best of...

Re: Flowmeter and Regulators

This thread discusses your question at great length. Since your original question was whether this was going to cost you a lot of money in argon, I did a quick calculation. The volume of argon trapped in a 1/4" inside diameter hose that's 3' long at atmospheric pressure costs me .016 cents. I ...

Do you mean there's a burst of argon coming out of the torch end, or some place else?

Can you post a picture of the flowmeter and clarify what you're asking. Dual flowmeters generally look something like this. Most have the secondary pressure set to some value like 30-50psi, but it sounds like yours is adjustable.

Thanks MarkL, nice looking touch control, but still on the torch hand. The control is connected by a separate wire to the welder, so it can be mounted any place you want it. You could put it on your wire hand, or your leg, or wherever. The photo happens to show it velcroed to the torch, but that's ...

So I will have to run romex from a 2 pole breaker to the garage. Assuming that an 8/3 romex should be enough? Its about 65 ft to where I can drop an outlet into the garage. For Romex you would need to use 6/3 to technically be in compliance. If you were running THWN in conduit #8 would be OK. Since...
