Re: Who has the best optics for an automatic lens?

I like the trusight 2 but it is front heavy and a pain to do a 5g position weld.

Re: What hood offers the best optics?

I have the optrel 2.5 Vega view and the optrel lite flip autopilot they are both light and have really good optics but I have issues with them both. They have both been flashing back from om dark state to light state when I have not been welding with them. I finish running a weld wait a few seconds ...

Re: How to tig weld a perfect open root on carbon?

If you use no gap how would you weld a joint that is not perfect or that you need to square up with a wedge. It seems like things might get bound up in a situation like that and may be metal bound?

What is the best welding hood for most applications?

I have the optrel lite flip autopilot and I think it is the best hood that can do everything a welder needs. It is super light, it has a flip up lens fir grinding mode in a number 1 lens. It adjusts from 4-14 automatically. I think this is the best hood that can do multiple steps. Weld, cut, grind. ...

Bridge tacks during testing fro tig

I have seen a lot of welders who back feed a root pass that put a bridge tack to hold the pipe in position. This does not burn in to the root and only contacts the groove, and welders are able to apply a bridge tack without an internal purge on the pipe. During a test if a welder wanted to back feed...

Backfeeding/ Looking through the gap

I would like to learn how to tig weld a root while looking through the bevel. I am using a regular lens because with an automatic the sensors will get blocked and I will get flashed. I am also running at 80-90 amps, gapping at 5/32 and running 1/8 and if it slams shut then I will run 3/32. How shoul...

Scratch start tig, arc force

I hooked up a tig rig to my welding machine in the stick mode and running off of straight polarity. Does the arc force function still work when doing tig or will the settings be reversed like 0 = more arc force and 100 = less arc force?

Re: Tig welding issue on everlast machine

I figured it was probably some to do with the wave. No big deal I was planning to order a regular scratch start tig rig that runs from the bottle and not through a solenoid inside the machine. I received it today and hooked it up just like any standard scratch start tig rig and everything is running...

Tig welding issue on everlast machine

I have an everlast mts 200 and I am trying to tig weld with this machine but it seems to establish a really small arc when I first strike up an arc. I usually try to put in a root around 80 amps for tig on carbon steel pipe with 1/8 " 70s-6. It seems like it starest a really small arc with the ...

Re: Undercut on open root

I am currently running the arc force at 75% I guess it won't hurt to bump it up more to see what happens. It is a practice joint anyways. Thanks.

Re: Undercut on open root

Thanks I will try that. I only wear my earplugs when I am doing a lot of grinding or in a very noisy area but I do take them out especially for the reason of running my root pass. I like to listen to the sound and make sure it is penetrating good enough. I don't have these penetration issues when do...

Re: Undercut on open root

I cleaned up the inside of the pipe really good and still had issues with being just under flush. what could you recommend? it seems if I run it at a higher amperage then it lays out flat and I have issues and the only way to counteract this is to maybe run it at 75 amps or below or use a whipping m...

Re: Undercut on open root

I am just putting a land on the pipe and knocking down any sharp edges on the inside. Should I clean it up really good with a flapper wheel on a die grinder?

Undercut on open root

I have been practicing a 6g on 8 inch pipe just to get my root corrected. 3/32 gap at 75-80 amps with 1/8 land and 1/8 6010, when I am running my root it ties in fine and everything looks god except the bottom half of the pipe shows a little shallow and even undercut in some spots. I have tried slow...

@ ploand308, Are you talking about local 125 out of cedar rapids? I was suppose to go out that way for a call back in august of 2014 before I got a CWI gig close to home. I think it was for a nuclear power plant if I am correct. I am currently in Wichita Kansas because that's where my wife and I liv...

Do you think if I slow down my progression on my root that it will push more of a root inside or the keyhole will close up?

Re: To whip a root or not to whip that is the question

Your absolutely correct poland308, I think it is beneficial to learn how to put in a root pass with hotter settings close to 80 amps. That way after your root is put in you are ready to rock with the 3/32 7018 and don't even have to mess with your machine. I have been out of the welding game for abo...

Re: To whip a root or not to whip that is the question

@ diesel, that is very true, a fire watch can turn your machine up for you but it is also wise to let them know what dial to turn up and how many amperages. I told my fire watch once before to bump me up 10 but he turned the gear range I think from 75-125 to 125 to 175 or so. Long story short he bum...

To whip a root or not to whip that is the question

I usually run my 6010 open root pass with a drag technique, I will start whipping in and out if it gets hot or if the fit up changes. I have seen people in the past just use a whip technique and it lays down a really nice weld bead, they also tell me that every welder should be able to whip a root p...
