Re: Cast Iron Repair
Hi I do a lot of cast iron repairs turbo chargers etc. and where possible I always use the TIG with silicon Bronze filler. For the job you are describing the important thing to note is that the weld must be completely flat when finished. To arc weld this a Nickel rod would be the norm but the proble...

Hi I make aluminium boxes out 40thou 6061 sheet of course I use 1'' x 1'' angle with a 1mm wall to frame the box then its easy to weld the edges together butt weld backed by the angle. Is there any reason you could not have even a 3/8 strip behind the joint tack this on first and then you would get ...

HI Matt, I've been TIG welding for a long time and I would definitely recommend TIG for Alloy car bodies. I have welded BMW car bonnets as the 5 series has an aluminium body. I've also welded a broken shock mount on the chassis of a 5 series. In the case of steel car bodies I use TIG brazing with si...

Re: New member from B.C.
HI Darrell, Sorry for the late reply I haven't been on the forum in a while been so busy. To answer your question 5356. The reason is 6061 Aluminium is a primarily a magnesium alloy about 1% and so is 5250 about 2% magnesium and 5356 is a 5% magnesium rod. So the 5356 is closer to both alloys and wo...

Re: Pulse TIG welder question
Hi I've been TIG welding Aluminium a long time but I'm not sure exactly sure what your asking or what you are trying to do. In order to TIG weld Aluminium you must have an AC/DC welder it must be set to AC. Argon gas is used, it sounds like you have a scratch start TIG does it have an AC setting? Pu...

Re: New, Old cold saw
Hi To answer your question yes soluble oil is the best for that type of cutting. Multi function cutting oil by LubeSol. You can buy a 5 litre drum of soluble oil and then mix it your self, for steel a 5% oil to 95% water mix is good, and for Stainless steel a 9% oil to 91% water. So roughly 1 part o...

Re: Welding A freeze crack in a small aluminum water pump
Hi typically for pulse welding you have the high amps or welding amps at a higher ampage than normal welding
current 30 to 50% higher and the backround or low amps at 30% of the high current. I hope that helps.
Cheers Bert

Re: What polarity for tig aluminum
HI! for TIG welding aluminium you set your machine to AC . The TIG torch connection is the same connection as it would be for Steel which is DCEN (electrode negative) or the negative connection on your welder. You always use the same connection for TIG on the welder, you just change the AC/DC switch...

Re: Welding A freeze crack in a small aluminum water pump
Hi I've been TIG welding cast Aluminium parts for over 25 years so it's not at all a problem, you first need to clean the part really well, if you have a die grinder with a tungsten burr that is ideal, if not a grinder with a new disc if not a file then a stainless steel wire brush, then some Aceton...

Hi Guys I'm here in Dublin Ireland, looking for some tips on how to cut out a flange without getting so much distortion. I cut out a 9'' OD circle with a 6'' hole with my plasma cutter, out of some 1mm (40thou) mild steel and when I was done it buckled so bad that it was unusable. So I went again wi...

Breaking Ceramic Cup
When welding 1/4 inch (6.4mm) Aluminium with AC TIG using a gas lens and 3/32 ( 2.4mm) Tungsten the Front often breaks off my Ceramic Cup. I'm using a no. 7 Cup with a 3/32 Electrode 2% lanthenated with about 1/4 inch stick out, A nice little bit of balling at the tip and about 15cfh of Argon flow a...

Re: Alum filler on al-castings
Hi I use 4043 on All castings Cylinder heads and Engine parts it's the silicone in the alloy that helps the weld to flow and tends to be shiny in comparison to 5356 which has magnesium.
