Re: Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Thanks CJ, This pic shows the gap. Even with the way the kit is made I could have take more time and at least made the gap more uniform. 16 Ga SS Not Okay 20240328_101744 1920 x 1080 res.jpg And this is a pic of 16 ga with a tight fit on the corner before welding. 16 Ga SS Okay 20240328_101913 1920 ...

Re: Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Hi CJ,
There's not really a way to use a backing plate to weld the whole cube when it is bent into shape.
I will take a pic or two later and post here so that it makes more sense.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Hey Everyone, This question is somewhat related to the original fit-up question I asked. I've purchased several 16 ga stainless dice/cube coupon kits from Amazon. The way they are pre-cut, some of the cubes are assembled by tacking individual pieces together. Others are fit together by bending the s...

Re: Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Hi CJ, You need to hold three pieces that intersect together and tack them up. Then another three. Two sides of one piece aligning one side of one piece that its end aligns to the third piece. (I know, that sounds complicated but if you grab some pieces and imagine putting them together it will make...

Re: Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Hi Everyone,
My wife bought me a small stainless steel soccer ball welding kit for Valentine's Day. It's going to be a bit more of a setup challenge than stuff with mild steel and right angles. I might need to wait on this one for a while. Lol

Hi Arno, I sure relate on the glasses. I have tried different glasses and different cheaters. I need to accept the fact that I'll never see as well as I would like. One component of getting older is also that your eyes need much more light to work well compared to when you're younger. Strong lightin...

Re: First Mistake - New to TIG
CJ,
Thanks,
The metal is 11 ga mild steel. I was using 3/32 SilBr. I started out at 100 A. The last few corners were at 85 A. I could feel what you described.. almost like the liquid filler just soaked up the filler rod too quickly.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Jeff

Re: First Mistake - New to TIG
Hi CJ, A couple attempts at outside corners on an inside out cube. I always have trouble controlling heat on these cubes when using mild steel filler. With the SilBr it is still a bit of a challenge. Quite a ways to go.... One of these pics may be acceptable, the other not so much. (I also need to g...

CJ, "Who listens to Old Man Time anyway." Now that's funny. I know I certainly do. (And when I don't, I sure wish that I had listened.) Thanks for the advice on the current settings. For 1/16" Does it sound right to start out at 45 to 50 A with. 0405 filler, or possibly 1/16" fil...

Re: First Mistake - New to TIG
Hey CJ,
I've watched a few videos on Siler.
I haven't seen much about amp settings. The settings that I've noticed seem high for not melting the base metal.
Should the same rule of thumb for mild steel work well for these joints?
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: First Mistake - New to TIG
Hi CJ, You are right... the outside faces of the cube metal weren't in such great shape. I wasn't planning on welding any of the outside faces on these, so I didn't clean them to get down to bare metal. The edges were bright bare metal, and I acetone-wiped them, too. Most of the mild steel welding I...

Re: First Mistake - New to TIG
Hi Guys,
Here are a couple of examples of the corners.
@CJ - I tried the #5 cup and didn't have success right away. Maybe it will take a little more time using that setup.
I hope to get more weld time today.
Thanks for all your help.
Jeff

Re: First Mistake - New to TIG
HI CJ, Thanks. All your input is helpful. I've been running an #8 cup, about 20 cfh, and 125A. I'm still working to get my vision locked in on the puddle, so almost all of the welds have been horizontal to keep things as simple as possible. I'll work on making the puddle hotter and speeding up a lit...

Re: First Mistake - New to TIG
Hi Everyone, I have been working on outside corner welds on mild steel cubes. The metal is 11 gauge. I'm using 3/32" filler. I'm being careful, trying to keep the HAZ from getting too hot. The problem I'm having is when I add the filler it sticks slightly until the puddle catches up to it. I'm ...

Hi CJ,
Thanks for your input. I haven't tried to do it with stainless. What you said makes sense.
I'll do the clamping with the stainless.

Re: Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Hi Again,
I'm not sure if it's good practice; but, I have just started tacking panels together while they are flat and then bending them to 90 degrees before tacking them closed. It seems to work pretty well.
I'm not sure that it would work with stainless, though.

Re: Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Hi tweake, Thanks. Yeah... the fit on the 1/16" is difficult to get as close as I would like. I know that the better the fit-up the easier it is to do a decent job with consistent beads. I sure relate on the glasses. I have tried different glasses and different cheaters. I need to accept the fa...

Re: Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Hi BiilE.Dee, Thanks for replying. I do have a fixture table. I've also been using a heavy gauge steel angle iron as more of a guide than a fixture to get reasonably close to a 90 degree joint. I just haven't clamped the stainless to the angle. I was thinking that I might be making it more difficult...

Holding Stainless Steel for Fit-Up
Hi Everyone, I've been doing some 1/16" and 1/8" stainless Tig welding. I'm sure I'm making the fit-up harder than it needs to be. Part of it is my eyesight and coordination. With steel I use magnets. The main use would be 90 degree corners like setting up cubes for outside corner welds. I...

Re: trouble with oxidization welding stainless
Hi, It sounds like you've been dealing with a lot of challenges. Being in the US makes things a lot easier from a commercial side. I feel fortunate. I'm pretty much a beginner with TIG, although I have been working off and on at it for 4 or 5 years. Lots of great advice from CJ and Tweake along the ...
