IMG_4557.JPG IMG_4559.JPG IMG_4559.JPG Holding small pieces at odd angles has always been a problem for me. I am have made a proof of concept magnetic fitting for a magnetic dial indicator holder. How do you cut the contaminated end off your tungsten? I have been using a cutoff wheel but I am now using 1/8 tungsten and its like cutting down a tree with a pocket knife

Re: pops and snaps while tig aluminum
Anyone have a tank of argon go funky mid tank? I used up the tank and got a replacement, things got much better. I ran 6 or 10 rods using up the old tank so I did get a little hood time in but nothing that I would call half way good. With the new tank the puddle forms better and cleaner. Just for ki...

Re: pops and snaps while tig aluminum
Thanks for the encouragement. the rod 3/32 4043 Metal was 20 or so years old but never used. I wire brushed with a hand stainless brush and wiped with acetone. Never saw any change in the finish after brushing. From what I have read and watched sanding with aluminum oxide disks can imbed impurities ...

pops and snaps while tig aluminum
New to aluminum tig only burnt about 6 rods, boy do I have a lot to learn.
While welding, every thing sounds fine then I start to get pops and snaps for a bit then back to sounding normal. Any ideas on what causes this?
AHP 201
#6 standard cup 15cfh
3/32 2% lanthanide

Re: Cheap tungsten sharpener
Looking again the spiral may have been caused by the angle on the wheel

Re: Cheap tungsten sharpener
That was my first try. The spiral should straighten out a bit if I turn the tungsten slower. The groves, maybe they will get finer as the wheel gets used or I would need to find a finer wheel

In an effort to have a dedicated tungsten grinder I looked at what I had around the shop. I came up with a HF 4" continuous rim wet diamond masonry blade and a HF 4 1/2 " grinder. So what the heck lets see how it works. I am able to clamp the grinder to the bench by the blade guard and alm...

Removing galvanizing if you have the time
I have read a few post on this forum about removing galvanizing before welding. Soaking in cooking vinegar works but takes days to remove hot dipped galvanize. Other acids are just to strong and dangerous for my liking. I have just learned that vinegar comes in different strength up to 30%, cooking ...

Walter flexcut mile scale
I just picked up a few Walter flexcut mile scale disks.
I tried it out on some light mill scale and it seems to cut the scale as well as a grinding disk but with much less gouging.
anyone else try these disks?

Re: hot ves cold rolled
I setup a video camera and shot at the same settings as before. From that video see my torch angle looks a bit much and my travel speed seems to be about 6" /min which I am guessing is a bit slow. As for using heaver material, 1/8" is about as heavy as most of my projects are so I need to ...

hot ves cold rolled
I it harder to get a shinny weld on hot rolled carbon steel then cold rolled? Jody seems to always use cold rolled and get beautiful welds, while no matter what I try, mine on hot rolled are almost all gray. Gray enough that when padding beads I seem to be making my own mill scale with each bead. I ...

Re: carbon steel headers
On light material I find that I like to use the smallest tungsten I can for the amperage. The smaller tungsten seems to me to lights up better, gives a more directed arc which is easer to control and are much quicker to sharpen. Most of my welding is on thin material so I mostly use .040 and 1/16 tu...
